My wife just came home having spent $400 on makeup which seems like a lot but I have no idea how much it's supposed to be.

That sounds cheap.

My understanding from knowing a few highly sought after beauticians is that cosmetics are a "you get what you pay for" deal.

I applied for a CC at Sephora as a gift for my wife and told her to get whatever she needed. The bill was almost $1k. Brushes are like $40 each and they need like 10 of them to start with. Then on repeat visits it's like $200-400 whenever they run out of some eye liner or whatever lol. My wife has make up she uses for everyday use and then the expensive stuff she uses for when we go out or special occasions. I can't imagine what people spend when they have jobs that aren't from home that put a lot of pressure on how you look.

I should mention this was a trip to replace some stuff that she ran out of or had expired. So not like a single item but not a full on trip either. It was to Sephora and I know she uses some lesser name brand that's like not as bad for the environment or something.

Makes sense then. Concealer, eye liner, blush and whatever else she ran up is what will fork up the bill. Some of that stuff could be $90-100 alone.

Alright that makes sense. She also mentioned that the lady gave her a bunch of free stuff on top of it.

If she was buying a lot of high-quality stuff, that makes sense.

I started from scratch and spent $120, but it was all lower-end stuff, and generally just one of each thing.

Make up in general tends to be extremely expensive. My little sister who is obsessed with the stuff (as she does instagram, though she's extremely small in numbers) ended up learning to mix her own stuff, which has significantly lowered her overall budget. Not going to overpriced makeup stores helps a ton too. All your really doing is paying for a name brand.
