We don't know how this thing really started and he confirmed that he was boozy at the time. Also Dana isn't some wuss, he could've taken that slap and let it go in front of dozens of people but he chose to strike back making him look much worse than otherwise.

There's a lot more to the video than her slapping him and he retaliating. Others have pointed out how he's holding her wrists in the beginning, how the video cuts out and how distressed she looks before the slap. Then he hits her 3 times, and then it's hard to see but it looks like she goes down.
