I'm new to Souls games and needless to say Elden Ring is kicking my ass. I'm early enough in the game I can restart with a new build and not care about losing my progress, but I'm doing a magic guy now (astrologer) and getting stomped at every turn.

Without spoilers, what can you recommend to help? Is one build better than another for someone who sucks?

upgrade weapon and you just start wrecking enemies

i think only point of game where you have to be good are two bosses near the end imo. for solo play (no spirit ashes and co-op) and not using bleed build or other op builds that idk about

Should I focus on melee or magic? I seem to run out of FP a lot. Or something else, like archery?

Magic was fun for me but I thought it became too weak near the end of game. There was one boss that was super duper annoying with magic so I'm like fuck this. I switched to power stancing colossal weapons and the game became much easier.

I played as magic build before that patch came out which made a bunch of spells more viable. I also played when the most OP magic stuff wasn't widely known. Its possible that magic is OP now

magic is ridiculously op, but you can get walled if you rely on it a bit too much. ideally you should have a weapon as well.

i guess absolute beginner advice is run around the map and collect golden seeds and the other item to boost your flask. get the horse asap obviously. try to find weapons and stuff and see if you can find one you like. you won't get new spells til a bit later so a good weapon is critical early on. i guess you can also run around the map looking for spells and staves.

Magic build? Look up the locations of the below:

Meteorite Staff
Rock Sling

They'll carry you in the early game while you get your stats up and generally increase your knowledge of the game

Starting over is pointless. The starting character you choose really has no bearing on the game at all. Magic is really OP, but really you can beat the game any way you want to. Learn to time your rolls is the best I can tell you. There are a ton of really OP weapons for any build early in the game, if you are ok with using a guide, find a couple of them and experiment. Remember you can equip 2 different weapons. also get a seal to perform magic attacks the one that sends out those bugs is pretty OP and I think you get that fairly early.

If I was new to Souls games my first playthrough would be a more straightforward STR or DEX build, then second playthrough would probably be some kind of magic build. Nothing wrong with what you're doing though, whatever kind of playstyle suits you.

I always go for dex builds in these FromSoft games. Magic in Elden Ring is OP but those builds are like glass cannons, I feast on mages in PvP.

Eh, STR is a good way to go but Int magic is soooo broken. At least it was last i played.

but if youre just trying to play single player there are many great builds you can do. I think it depends on how you want to play. STR is pretty straight forward where you wanna go grab some big weapons and double bonk.

INT can make you pretty broken too but there are bosses that are strong against it so it can fuck you up but luckily its a souls game so theres always a sword that scales with int/fth.

My first build was STR/INT and i wrecked but since it was at launch it left some to be desired. I went Dex/Arcane for a bloodbuild and that was broken too, then i think my 3rd build was a faith build but i got burnt out and quit.

That is a good point. There's a bit of a balance to be made between being powerful and having a challenging experience.

So I just managed to get some stuff out of a chest that lets me add skills to my weapons. I sat at one of those things on the ground and for the horse. Through the giant gate some large enemy stomps me. Should I go back and explore more before going further?

Keep exploring, level up health and attunement, and intelligence. You dont want to be too squishy.

Also its fine to back off and run away if things feel too hard.

You cant change the starting classes initial stats even if you respec. Which can become a huge burden early to mid game when you're gated from certain builds because you have to many points in a useless stat like arcane.

This can especially screw over players interested in meta pvp that's caped at lv125.

Just get a good spirit ash that you enjoy. There's some headless lady fairly early on that will carry you until you get the mimic tear, which will carry you the rest of the way.

ummm not really. it will take maybe an hour of grinding to make up the missing stat points. the highest difference between stats is 9 points which TC said he was at the beginning of the game which would take no time to really grind out. even mid game you would have evened out the important stats, and even if you didnt it would not take long to just fix those missing points. Starting class do not matter at all

This is what I did on my 1st playthrough and elden ring is my 1st souls game. Had to level up to 40 to finally clear this area.

If you get stuck TC just leave and level up, also the very bottom right side of the map is great for early game.

Mimic tear can really carry you, so definitely get that. Before you get mimic tear, your girl jellyfish aurelia can help by taking aggro away from you.

If you get stuck on a boss, put down your sign so other players can summon you, and this way you can level and learn the bosses tactics. You can also summon players to help, but this increases boss hp so a bad teammate can actually make the boss harder.
