Most of the justification for the attitudes is "God said so" The opposition (mostly) towards LGBT is "God doesn't like it" most of the justification for war in Iraq was "God wants us to" most of the argument for women being inferior to men is "God made them that way" It's how people justify a point they can't explain rationally. It's like saying "Let's not talk about anything except the bread in this sandwich" it's a keycomponent of the sandwich. Otherwise we're just discussing plain bread and it's not a sandwich. But I agree with your original point that anyone who uses "Think of the children!
