A good friend of mine pointed out that I really thrive on stories with really intense magic battles in really well paced stories with very likable adult characters who I wanna see survive.

I'd appreciate if you recommended some shows, movies and books where I can see this.

Keep in mind I'm looking for stories about characters that are either in their late teens, or adults, and I need them to be well paced.

By shows and movies I mean both live action and anime.

Some of my fave anime titles like this are:

Slayers
Brynhildr in the Darkness
Blast of Tempest
Fate/Zero
Stigma of the Wind
Slayers(fave comedy anime.)
Gunslinger Stratos
Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign
Log Horizon

Some of my more recent faves like this are:

The Misfit of Demon King Academy
Bofuri: invulnerable MMO
Fire Force
Record Of Grancrest War(fave anime.)
Afterlost
Cop Craft

Memory is a joke so I can't think of many live action fantasy shows or movies that nail this, but I do really really love Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

===

There's way too many books like this that are among my faves, but I can say that really love a lot of sci-fi fantasy graphic novels that Image Comics has published like The Sword, and Invincible.

There's also a ton of audiobooks and text only books that I love, but I've read 7 of them in the last month, and damnit I need things to actually look at for a while.

Overlord has some cool magic battles, but it isn't only magic.

Also I really dig how magic works in jobless reincarnation.

Black clover is basically all magic users.

Yeah, I hear that this is pretty good. How old are most of the main characters?

I'd say JUST the first Madara fight from Naruto... it's one of the only times I've seen a show ramp up the scale of devastation possible

...

but then they tone it back, so ya... it's only like 1 or 2 episodes

People say Brandon Sanderson magic systems can get pretty intense to the point of being off-putting.

King Killer Chronicles or Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear (so far) have very good magic systems in place.

While Wheel of Time does use a lot of magic I don't think it's as well explained to a satisfactory point FOR ME.

There ARE a LOT of intense fights, but it's also a long series. I just came off of finishing the entire series this year and damn the final battle CHAPTER being longer than an entire book of Harry Potter just goes to show how long the books took. I will admit the last three books were fucking kicking that I wanted to speed through it, but the slog to get there was real. I'd also say it wasn't worth it. The amount it took for what I got I would've rather gambled reading the starts of other series and getting disappointed and possibly finding a newer better series.

But really I'm surprised no one has recommended HxH. Probably one of the most complex "magic" systems out there with Nen.

If you don't mind flavor of the week "magic," there's also Jojo's bizarre adventures. You start with "ripple energy"/energy and then get into a whole different system later on stands.

This is a solid recommendation as well. They do magic well.

Not gonna lie I like progression and mechanics behind my magic. Magic for the sake of magic is lame for me.

HOWEVER, what I do enjoy about Overlord is how much it sticks to MMO mechanics. I don't want to spoil a part in Overlord, but if you've ever played one and saw the scene you'd laugh your ass off at it.

Log Horizon

I was hesitant to bring up Log Horizon, but if you mentioned having it as a favorite then you enjoy politics and MMO leaning type shows.

It's possible I was reincarnated as a slime (big lean on politics in S2 just like Log Horizon it legitimately feels like game of thrones) and Overlord are up your alley. Shield Hero is also MMOish with drama.

Saga of Tanya the evil is another with magic.

Re:Zero has magic but MC doesn't get to use much of it. However they are witness to others who use a ton of it. They're slowly working their way into it.

These are the best I caan come up with so far, before you start digging into dregs.

I'm really into isekais and there really is a lot of dregs.

And now I saw you mentioned comedy anime.

You want some of that, one of my favorites is absolutely Konosuba. It's a fantasy isekai parody. Absolutely hilarious.

Yeah, I'm ESPECIALLY picky here with Novels. If it's not well paced, or it's wasting my time, I'm just gonna glaze over. Can you recommend any fantasy that fits the bill where well paces is absolutely NOT arguable?

I'm not sure what classifies as scumbag. You'll rarely have someone be a pure scumbag that isn't likable in some manner.

You've got magic that is actively militarized and formations for warfare where it is used in forms of anti air magic and ground magic. You have larger scale combinations of magic mixed in with traditional forms of military such as tanks.

This is lower on the tier (but I thoroughly enjoyed it), where you're scraping I've watched a lot so I need something to fill in time level but is still solid somewhat.

The Dungeon of Black Company similar concept to Konosuba, it's a parody/satire on isekais but brought down to a critique on salarymen lifestyle.

If you don't like scumbag MCs, I don't recommend Jobless. There's some questionable stuff that people really dislike that occur in the series. If you don't like the "loser" type as well then yeah this may not be the right fit for you. Regardless, I see it as one of my favorites if you can look past some of its flaws. I don't think there's much point if you judge fast on "scumbags." I'll just not bother explaining it until I find out what scumbag means to you.

I'm pretty sure movies or anime worth mentioning are probably already popular on their own...

So you're left with books. I haven't read as much as I used to, but I can recommend a book called The Black Prism by Brent Weeks where magic was the focus and it had a rather interesting magic system.

Comedy isekai is a genre that I don't see too often because in general I don't go out looking for it. I've watched a lot of isekais while bike riding and many of them aren't too great or exceptional. It's just watching for the sake of watching (which is fine for passing time). Watching on purpose...well I value that more.

You already have plenty of great recommendations. Just start watching.
EchoBaz posted...

I mean, reading a wiki summary helps. But Tanya is a reincarnated guy who refused to believe in God and as such is considered scum. They've been a boss in their past and uses that for maximum efficiency in the show. It can be seen as "scummy" to make your entire platoon go out do something nobody wants to do or gamble their lives (in their eyes) just for the sake of completing a mission faster.

Jobless has an actual "scummy" character that gets redeemed somewhat later on. He's seen as the standard hikikomori type but became that way because...spoiler reasons. As such he pushes away a ton of people. He's a jerk to his only friend who sticks around for him and others. The show is him opening up more somewhat. However...this is actual spoilers what a lot of people have qualms with is this guy is an adult who has been reincarnated as a child but has full memories of being an adult. So when he starts feeling up a 13-14 year old girl as a 13-14 year old boy you have some questionable things when they're doing pervy stuff. It's a somewhat more adult show with those themes peeking out occasionally. It gets rather more serious in the second season or half of the first season? Oddly enough, this is another show with a fight against a god like entity in the meanwhile. In terms of disproving them.

Regardless, just start watching instead of looking for the perfect thing.

BTW, I keep getting told that most anime don't pull fiddler crap, and here you go recommending fiddler crap. Not cool.
