Note that the first TLOU game was really structured like a TV show. It was very directly split into very clear sections that would take you about 45-90 minutes to play through (depending on stuff like difficulty and how good a gamer you are) that ended with very obvious "this is the end of the episode" moments for you to put the game down and come back to later.

It was honestly one of the strongest points of that game, and something TLOU2 strayed from, which is part of the reason the 2nd game isn't as good (I mean, I really liked the 2nd game, but I think the first one is better).

Alone in the Dark (2008) also did this and you could choose which 'episode' to play and you could skip forward if you couldn't be bothered to play your current episode.
It was 'The Room' of video games along with other classics like Autobahn Police Simulator 3, Sonic 06 and Two Worlds.

Yeah I was getting ready to say that this isn't really a new thing, even for Naughty Dog, so maybe this is him saying the next game is going to be more like TLOU1 than the second game or something.

Tbh other games that I really liked also tried to do the "TV Show" story structure before, so I'm curious to see what exactly he's talking about. Some of the games have been cited here, but another one is Asura's Wrath. It felt like a playable anime with how the story was structured: split into chapters and called "Episodes", each one starts with a teaser for the chapter, each one has a "commercial break" moment (except there's no commercials of course), and then credits at the end of each one.

Had such a blast playing that game even though the gameplay was 80% QTE.

Well, the other 20% was actual gameplay, but yes, I did buy the true ending, and I did love my time. I really wish they didn't lock the true ending behind DLC though. I read a story that they were planning a sequel but sales didn't do so well, so they decided to just wrap up the story with a DLC chapter...dunno how true that is though.

If the game got a remaster with all its DLC content packed in I'd heavily consider getting that.

I mean, what else could he mean?

The structure is basically THE defining characteristics of a TV show. Whether it's an episodic narrative, long form, or somewhere in between, the only thing separating it from a movie is the structure.

I mean, what else is there? Title cards? Commercial breaks? Getting cancelled by netflix?
