No, I don't want to give you my goddamned email. I want your stupid bull fucking shill that takes up a page and a fucking half on a goddamned S22 Ultra to go the fuck away

They hide the dismissal options across the top in text smaller than a micropenis, and if you scroll down, as you're naturally inclined to do, it only gives you a Maybe Later, which then generates an additional block to give them your email.

You humbly ask me to not scroll away? This fuck shit makes me not even want to use your shitty website, not give you the fucking money you apparently fucking need so goddamned bad.

Unless Wikipedia is hosting the ads on their side, it's not an issue cause Adblocker

The same guy who runs Wikipedia runs Fandom. Fandom is the site he doesn't mind monetizing.

Adblocker can't fix Fandom and it wouldn't fix Wikipedia.

Personally I'll always chip in $5 or $10.

For how much I use Wikipedia it's worth it.

I don't mind that Wikipedia asks for donations, but I do mind that they do it using the "99% of people will just scroll past this" method. That's the shit you see from boomers on Facebook talking about how much they love Jesus. You're better than this, Wikipedia.

some level of entitlement probably

wikipedia has always been free and has no ads so when people are asked to donate to them it flips that lil outrage switch in the brain

Wikipedia is one of the greatest wonders of the modern world. There has never been a freely available of collective knowledge in history. I don't know a single person who doesn't use it regularly. I donate every donation season.

I wouldn't mind, if it was simply a "please donate" button

But the message is nearly 2 pages long on a phone with a massive screen and has a 1440x3880 resolution. That's a lot of fucking pixels they take up to show you a shitty 'heartfelt' message that you then don't even get a proper dismissal of after you've scrolled through it.

If it was user friendly, non-intrusive and didn't actively have hostile design, I wouldn't give a fuck. But it ticks every box of shit design and they can eat shit sandwiches for all I care.

Bro, clearly you're not one of the pre-internet kids who had to use a beat up 70s era encyclopedia set because your parents couldn't afford the hundreds of dollars necessary to get a new one. Wikipedia changed the world.

A simple banner in the top 33-50% of an article is enough to grab my attention.

Making something 150-175% the size of the visible page isn't attention grabbing. It's attention hostile. It turns into the equivalent of a cookie pop-up, or subscription newsletter bullshit. It doesn't make me want to do the thing, it makes me want to nuke your shit out of my way.

If you're going to pester people to do anything, you should do it in a calculated manner after they've had the opportunity to consume some of the content they want.

If I walked into McDonald's and I got jumped at the door by an employee pestering me to please try and buy a Big Mac, I'd fucking leave before buying anything. Whereas if I've had time to browse the menu and then at the register they ask, it's different and not devestatingly frustrating and annoying. Even in the drive-thru, you at least get the perceived opportunity to see the menu before they blast off some promotion.

Who still uses Wikipedia? We stopped using the internet for actual information like 5-10 years ago. There's no drama or people to yell at on Wiki.
