That meme isn't the gotcha you think it is.

It tries to make a comparison with something that doesn't compare. You don't need Twitter to survive or be a functioning adult. Yet you like many act like without it, one wouldn't be able to disseminate news effectively despite other platforms existing. The use of Twitter is also a very specific topic. Not a broad umbrella like being a so called environmentalist that doesn't quite mean what the meme tries to spin as a gotcha.

My posts apply to both Twitter and Musk.

No matter how much you may try to dance around it, Musk owns Twitter and is making direct changes to Twitter. Literally. He isn't some random asshole CEO who has no direct influence on his product. Musk has direct control of how Twitter is ran.

No matter how you try to rationalize it, if you are among the group of people who retweet, direct people to tweets, or direct people at all to Twitter... then you either consciousness or subconsciously support Musk and what he's doing with Twitter on some level. I think the point was more that people are used to getting their news on Twitter, especially considering that when something happens anywhere in the world, it's relatively easy to find people who are there and/or have videos of it in real time or something close to it. And that these are generally fairly easy to find too. Providing not necessarily the news itself, but an important first hand aspect of it that you don't usually see as much on other social media.

Then again I don't use much social media in general, so I might be wrong here.

It's a bit more than that for Twitter.

Twitter is very accessible to a general audience. You can view twitter in a browser while not even signed in which makes sharing tweets to other people really simple. This makes it a good way to share information to the world.

Other alternatives do exist, but since they are largely tied to downloading an app they simply aren't accessible. If there was a twitter alternative that anyone could view in a browser, people might actually switch over. People went from MySpace to Facebook and Digg to Reddit. Atm, there's simply not an alternative that can replace the main appeal of twitter.
