Saudi Arabia may be weighing in on plans for a 2-kilometer-tall, world's tallest tower, for its 18-square-kilometer master-planned area in the capital city of Riyadh.
The proposed skyscraper will be more than twice as tall as Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which stands at 828 meters and is currently the tallest building in the world, according to a report published by Middle East business intelligence (MEED) magazine on Wednesday.
"Contractors that have priced megatall towers in the region say that depending on the final design, a 2km-tall structure could cost about $5bn to construct," said the report.
"A design competition with a participation fee of $1m is underway for the record-breaking tower," as per MEED's sources.
As per the sources, roughly eight companies have been asked to compete.
Some of the top architectural companies in the world are collaborating, and they were chosen for the project based on their previous work on iconic structures and megatall towers around the globe.
US-based companies Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architecture, Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), and Gensler are among the probable participants.
France's Egis and Dubai-based Killa Design are also competing for the bid.
The projected tall tower in Riyadh is just one of many influential projects slated for the city's northern peripheries, west of the existing King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
The feasibility assessment for the development was carried out by EY, a global consultant, which falls under the masterplan of the Kingdom, stated the report.

They are moving mire towards tourism to diversify their income. So this is mostly for marketing purposes even if it does become a money sink. Although 5 billion is....pretty cheap for a project this large I think.

Oh well, this still makes more sense then dubais palm islands. That are probably the 2nd biggest waste of wealth and resources ever human history in my opinion.

Because it'll be a tourist hot spot and that ensures continued income even when Oil runs out.

If you ever see a news article about someone getting arrested for peeing off the top of the building, you already know who that is.

Are they gonna need special built cranes? I dont imagine they exist to build a skyscraper double the size of an existing one.

They seem to thrive in trying to impress with luxury and big things. I say use the money to build a bunch of more sensibly sized buildings instead.

Sounds like a horrid clusterfuck when trying to traverse the building. Even with like a 20+ elevator hub, talk about horrible congestion and slow travel, whether business, living, or both.

the old twin towers and I believe the Empire State Building have literal springs underground that are supporting the structure from snapping and breaking from the wind and rotation of the planet.

Burg Khalifa is only 160 floors, this monster would probably be around tree fiddy.

Imagine being the person to switch out the blinking lights at the very top.

I remember reading somewhere that the Burj Khalifa's plans had to account for the fact that there was no way to get the crane down off the top after it was completed, so they just closed it up and it's still in there
