I can't say exactly "how" for sure, but considering the long time it's been a part of my life, I'd find it hard to believe that gaming hasn't affected it to some extent.

I rarely post, have been on and off for years. But this topic is the first one that actually resonates with me.

When I was 5, my parents got divorced. My dad ended up going to jail for physically assaulting my mom, and she moved me and her a few states away.

When it became just her and I, she became very abusive and went to alcohol and men. So when she would have men over, I was locked in a closet with a probably 12 tv, and a Nintendo 64 with Ocarina of Time.

That went on from about the age of 6 until I was 13, and the only other game I got was Majoras Mask. The only thing I really had that kept me going were those two games, and being a hero in my kid mind.

Fast forward, Im 32, Ive broken past a lot of the issues, I have a wife, daughter (who we named Zelda because of what it meant to me), and very good job and like. And I legitimately believe that having that escape saved me from something much worse and helped me stay away from a cycle of abuse.

So yeah, a game changed my life.

No they have not

Unlike your^^ story, video games probably drove a rut in between me and my dad if anything, since he wanted a boy that would play sports, and I hated/hate sports more than anything. Got much more interested in video games, computers, how they worked was basically magic. Sports were like... balls being thrown around... Electronics are tiny little magic cities with little buildings on a motherboard that magically create a 3D man on my TV that I can control. That's waaay cooler.

Funny thing is my sister loved sports and he ignored her desire for it because he was caught up in stereotypes or something.
