I fill up. The gauge says "490 miles to empty." 30 miles later and it says "417 miles to empty"

Your either driving too fast, accelerating to hard, or stopping at too many red lights.

I'm sure there's a lot more that goes into that though.

Might be a product of how you're driving - city driving which is a lot of stopping and starting will get worse mileage than steady speed on the highway

I noticed this, too. I think theyre adding ethanol to it to stretch it.

You're driving around town I'm guessing? My Civic does the same but also goes up from 506 to ~590 when I'm driving on the highway.
