I'm currently running Delta Green tonight, there's a $40 book that you need, and some dice.
If you look around, you can get it for Free, or for Free+.

You can get more books if you want, but it's all imagination past that.

So you play this game and only this game? Or does your group also play other games that cost money?

Because my game groups are only 40k So yeah its a few hundred dollars for about 10 years for me and 20 for some of the people I play with.

Consider:
Each new edition that comes out, and people move to the other edition, or, your army doesn't exist.
Each person needs to spend hundreds of dollars, not just one person buying one book.
You still need terrain
An army isn't just that small bundle

40k costs thousands of dollars to play, let alone the time investment for painting.

Compared to:
Buying maybe $10 of dice
One book (if you don't want to find alternative methods for the book)
Maybe a book every 3 months (if you don't find alternative methods for the book)

Each new edition that comes out, and people move to the other edition, or, your army doesn't exist.

Armies don't fade in and out. Literally could play the same army for years. AND the core rules are free, no need to buy new edtions.

You still need terrain

Game stores have tables you can play on or you can ghetto fabulous it and just use literal trash to the terrain which many people start off with.

An army is two of those boxes in most cases, or a little addition to them if needed. PLUS 1000 point games do exist, which all of those boxes are 1000 points or more.... so yea.

Is that what people primarily play? Either way, the base price is still damn expensive, you're looking at a total of $400 for people to sit down and play a game.

It's not about the money for it being painted. It's the time and energy, I'm not interested in painting an army, I don't even have the space to build a little painting corner in my apartment. I don't even know why a wargaming hobby needs the customers to paint their minis, but that's a separate thing.
So if I'm not interested, what am I supposed to do? Buy a prepainted army? Spend more money?

I really wanna get into a space marines faction, but it's huge model catalog keeps me away. The points change too much and units dip in and out too often for me.

I play to win, not to have fun. Well I mean I have fun, but you know what I mean. That's why I like tau and knights, the models are almost always relevant and played.
