yea, I had this BoA account when I was in college, and if you had less than $300, they would take out $3 a month.

it got to the point where I had a negative balance, but they closed it after a while.

Yeah my bank said money would be available in the account immediately. It was not, so I was charged $37 3 times for overdraft fees. I refused to pay it so they stacked up. They even admitted fault and would not remove the fees, and I was put on a list so that no bank would work with me for 7 years.

My bank requires $20 in the account.

Mine requires 25. I don't count that cause I can't touch it without closing the account

How can some one be so bad with their money that they withdraw until they're in the negative?

It could be that they barely make enough money to pay their bills/rent and then the bank fees kick in

Yeah, there was a time where I was jobless, and had -$12 dollars in my bank account due to an over draft. I even slept in my car a couple of times. It was really rough >_>

But then I got a job, worked really hard even tho it was kinda shit, used those skills to get an even better job, got promoted twice, and now I make $100k and have like $130k saved up to try to buy property Good things do happen if you stick to it and work hard and smart, and just do what you gotta do >_>

OK, that's fair I suppose. Banks I guess like to kick people when they're down.

Had a account once that at the time I didn't know would charge you everytime you checked your funds via phone (work forced me into the card cause they didn't wanna do checks and I lollygagged on opening my own account) so a few times I checked my funds via phone right before a purchase and had just enough so I thought. Not normally something I'd do but I was a teen with no real financial responsibilities so if it wasblike the day before payday I didn't mind blowing what little I had left

Ive been at -$900ish before.

Suffice to say never turn on that feature that lets you just use your negative balance as a credit card if your bank has it. And especially not when you're basically still a kid and don't know how to adult yet.

Yes 6 years ago when I was on welfare, a year after getting laid off and my unemployment ran out.

Had only $20 for a week and used it for bus fair to get to job interviews. Remembering those times I swore I'd never be there again.

I was less than one month from that being the case because of credit card debt and waiting to hear back from a job. Grad school stress combined with living just slightly over the threshold of paycheck to paycheck was a bad combination

Never again. Now I don't buy anything on CC that I can't immediately pay off (should've done that day 1) and have an emergency savings account to get by for 2 years at my current standard of living if I had no income

Tbh, that could've been many years ago.

In a similar vein, I've encountered ATMs that would charge a fee to check your balance.

Yes. I was struggling hard after college and my bank account even hit the negatives a couple times and at one point, I had to ask for an extension on my rent. Shit was rough. Now I make decent money and don't live paycheck to paycheck.

yeah, when i was in my early 20s working at Walmart and i was irresponsible with keeping track of my bank account, and the person i had been best friends with since high school had turned into a scummy meth head and petty thief without me realizing it, until i figured out that he had been funnelling small amounts of money out of my account over a period of 4 months totalling about $1600 because i had stupidly left my debit card information on his Xbox Live account after purchasing some DLC for a co-op game we had been playing. when i got a notice from my bank that i had overdrafted i was like "wtf?" and then i finally looked into my recent bank account activity and, yeah.

Apparently bank of America. Idk if it was different cause I didn't go to the bank and get the card my employer did. So maybe it was a different kinda card than one would get had they opened the account themselves.

I've been with a credit union for state employees since and have never looked back. Even before i was a state employee as a parent can get their kids accounts.
