I mean obviously we should be forcing the arms makers to take vastly lower profits from any given piece of equipment.

But we also really should be heavily supporting Ukraine. Aside from Moral considerations Russia controlling Ukraine would Russia a LOT more geopolitical weight to throw around. Ukraine is pretty important to the global food supply among other things.

Also Afghanistan was a relatively small amount of soldiers for most the war fighting an insurgency. The scale of the conflict here is several magnitudes larger.

If you think keeping Russia from effectively annexing Ukraine doesn't help people in the US I don't know what to fucking tell you man.

I think Ukraine deserves aid, but I think it's also reasonable to ask what the endgame for this war is going to look like at this point. We don't want to keep pouring money into this cause, right? We want to see it end at some point... right?

And no, I'm not talking about appeasement for Putin. Whatever ceasefire terms are drafted should keep Ukraine as the main beneficiary and no less than 100% withdrawal by Russia.

Exactly lol. It'll be far more expensive down the road if Russia annexes Ukraine and sets its sights on a NATO member or a NATO ally.

They're getting massive funding from multiple other countries along with military gear donated to further inflate costs and for the most part we're merely funding them to engage in a proxy war.

Stopping a hostile nation from creeping up on our allies borders and seizing control of a huge portion of the global food supply(and several other important industries/materials) does help people in the U.S. Also discouraging nations

It's a long term investment. Ukraine becomes a closer ally. Russia's strength is degraded and they fail to seize control of a huge portion of resources and land. And hopefully its helps deter future destabilizing invasions from Russia or others. A less violent more stable world benefits everyone.

Spend the money to stop a hostile nation from further destabilizing Europe down the road without having to send your own soldiers to fight

A 10 billion dollar aid package could theoretically be made up of $10 billion worth of military gear that's already been produced.

As I understand it, a lot of this stuff was sitting in storage and due to expire anyway.

But maybe I'm wrong, I dunno.

About 1/3 of the money is to cover us deploying our troops in Europe and money Ukraine will use to buy weapons from us. The money isn't all being spent on Ukraine this year, just allocating it to be used over the course of a few years.

Taking anything Glenn Greenwald says at face-value

One: it's good to stop Russia from annexing Ukraine. Their next step has always been the Baltic states, which are NATO, so WW3's price tag would be much higher.

Two: it's not like we would have used any of that money in the US in a way that would benefit the average American. The GOP won't allow it, so fuck it, I'd rather we use it to help the victims of a war of agression.

Do you really think they're sending actual money?
US is mostly sending weapons, none of them even being top of the line products.
Those weapons are beating Russia with ease, which was always a wet dream and since they're domestically produced, the US is actually making a profit from it.

USA is solving their Russia problem without any losses, this is literally a dream scenario for them.

Yes, that's a thing with military spending. It's not always new money spent but the cost of what was used. When they talk about how much a war costs us a lot of it is bombs we paid for years earlier.

I imagine we are sending a lot of rifles to Ukraine considering our military is switching to new platforms, so we have a lot of stock to find something to do with.

None of this money was ever going to be allowed to help any American citizens anyway. At least this way it's helping someone.

It has always been kinda interesting US doesnt have money for more stimulus checks, to feed the poor, universal health care. Yet somehow always have the money for a war.
