Mix of both is how I did it. But psychologists did nothing for me, I worked on myself through exercise and social interactions.

ADHD isnt really the same as having autism imo

or maybe its just the least severe of the 3, idk.

i feel like its very easy to get misdiagnosed just for being hyper. I do notice it a little as an adult though, mostly when cleaning the house. Its hard to focus on a certain area without getting side tracked.

Getting help
What are you getting help to do? Ultimately, the second one.

The first one is real life advice that someone who actually cares about you will give. Second option is advice from people who want to virtue signal and don't give two shits about what will happen to you.

Neurologically divergent?
Please elaborate.

It's kind of a new-age term used to describe individuals with psychological differences from what is called "neruotypicality". Essentially it's things that neruologically impair people trying to operate in a world that isn't built for them, similar to how someone in a wheelchair might face difficulties in a world that was designed with people who are able to climb steps without needing an accommodation. Isn't a bad thing, it just makes people who have these divergences different and sometimes need accommodations of their own to function in a neurotypical environment, same as someone in a wheelchair having a ramp built for them to get somewhere that steps wouldn't allow.

"Masking" is what people with neurodivergent traits do in order to seem neurotypical (so someone with ADHD sitting in class and forcing themselves to pay attention to a lecture when they really want to look out the window and have to fight themselves to do it). The neurodivergent community is trying to make it so these sorts of behaviors aren't necessarily frowned-upon as it's just something people who have these traits have to deal with at a core level (removing the need to mask as heavily if the behavior is non-disruptive).

It's not, I'm not saying it is, but they are both recognized as forms of neurodivergence. Neurodivergence simply means that: a neurological divergence that makes operating in a neurotypical environment challenging because that world wasn't built for people like them. They still can, there are just extra steps involved in facilitating that on both sides.

Hot and spicy internet take: I don't know if neurodivergent is a helpful term anymore because it seems like it's describing everyone on a scale of "can't function without a full-time minder" to "I sometimes get a bit anxious in social settings with people I don't know".

What is neurotypical?

What is neurotypical?

It's based on the compendium used to diagnose psychological conditions called the "DSM". There is some meaningful documentation to be found on the subject.

What is neurotypical?
A lot of neurotypical people definitely get anxious in social situations. Many neurotypical people are fucked up, just in different ways. Ultimately, most people have issues and we should be more open about discussing and accepting them.

Autism is a very wide spectrum, so one person might be like everyone else aside for a deep interest in one narrow subject, such as trains, stamps, or marine biology, whereas another person on the specturm is all but in appearance and motor skills a 1-year old child.
The fomer can function in and interact with society pretty much seamlessly, whereas the latter can't so much as communicate their desire to go to the toilet, much less do it themselves.

I tend to think of autism as a "meta-spectrum" that can encapsulate other neurological challenges. It's so broad that labeling something as "autism" almost feels reductive--you need to be more specific as to what's being observed in order to provide proper treatment and support.

My fave coworker is pretty obviously neurodivergent: they just think differently, but they have tics and it's heart-breaking to me how embarrassed they are of their own tics. They seem to spend a lot of energy mercilessly suppressing them.

Fucking fantastic at their job though. And too smart and too lovely to be in retail, but that's a lot of people I work with.

I am in retail (corporate side) and I know there are a ton of smart and lovely people in the field. We couldn't function without them.
