I'd say move forward. I promise you that you'll end up staying in the same place doing side quests for a long time...this game is pretty long.

You did pick the female protagonist, right?

Gear stats go up every 10 levels starting at 1 so only respec at 11, 21, 31, etc. Maximize crit chance, crit damage, and get good at dodging, that's pretty much the best offense and you'll be steamrolling through enemies. Going all out in melee combat is much more fun than navigating through stealth. Remember you're a merc, pay no mind to staying loyal to either side in the war because they all fuck you over.

I love this game but most people complain about how unrealistic and detached it is from the already established AC lore, saying it holds up as its own game away from the franchise but left a bad taste in those who expected another game that followed the formula. Don't listen to them, game is extremely fun and a huge time sink.

Oh yeah, I hear bad things about the male protag, especially since he was only tacked on later. I always go with Kassandra.

Yeah, I totally went back and forth in those, often joining the "weaker" side just for the lulz

Don't neglect naval combat. I did when I first started playing and it came back to bite me in the ass mid-game.

I would also encourage you to pay attention to every merchant you come across. There's a merchant that sells customization merch but only takes a very specific currency which escapes me because I played the game like three years ago.

It should be standard procedure for any AC player with this last trio of games, but I'll mention it anyway. Use the eagle eye detect button often when running around in the woods to detect resources for crafting. There's tons of wood and ore for crating that comes in handy.

But remember to hunt down cultists once you uncover them, as they can get you gear sets that can give some very nifty buffs over the purple gear. You don't need to upgrade you gear all the time either, as typically can just use whatever new highest level bit you get unless you get a full set of the aforementioned gear - I've been upgrading my pilgrim set every 10 levels, as gives you infinite invisibility as its full set perk, so makes taking forts down easy.

Go for hunting mercs down as well before upgrading gear/ship etc as well, as they give you hefty discounts once you go up in ranks.

Feel free to go exploring new areas on land/ship as lots to do and you don't need to just follow the main quest (unless you want to of course)

Serious, though non-plot, spoilers:

If you want to speed things up by putting a low cap on your health for much higher damage output, go and check out the deep sea ruins between Thera and Naxos. Once I got that, the game felt much better.

First and foremost, sync ALL the fast-travel points. You get a special perk that negates fall damage for you.

Many things that you do early on can and will have an effect on the game later on, especially endings.
There are multiple endings, and if you want the best ending possible...

Whenever you interact with Deimos/Alexios, do not be antagonistic; instead, choose the options that try to reason with them, to talk sense into them, to tell them who the real enemy is, and that you care for them.

Also, be a forgiving misthios; spare the one known as the Wolf of Sparta that a slimy serpent of a man sends you to kill. This also spares another character later in the game.

Do not kill the villain known as the Monger publicly; instead, kill him in a secluded location like the other character suggests. IIRC, doing it privately allows you to talk another Cult member into leaving the Cult of Kosmos. This also allows you to get all the evidence you need to prove that one of the 2 Kings of Sparta is a Cult member and you don't get thrown out of Sparta for making an accusation without enough evidence.

Like others have said ignore the majority of the side quests

Purple gear is better than gold gear for the one extra perk slot as opposed to gold always having one being static.

Don't bother trying to get all regions controlled by either side, there's no achievement for it and after a while regions will switch sides without any involvement from you, so it's impossible to have all Spartan or all Athenian regions.

I dunno if that's true anymore. A lot of the gold gear "set bonus" got big upgrades and some are fantastic. Infinite invisibility with the pilgrim set is just beautiful.

The lieutenants should join you, but that's it I believe. Why upgrading the crew to 4 lieutenants can be a good "first one" to do.

the actual side quests are pretty good by ubisoft standards

I got burnt out wildly so don't do everything. Gold question marks are legitimate side quests and the rest are junk

There's a lot of nude mods

I'm also planning on playing this game soon so this will be useful for me too. I keep trying to get into this game after loving Origins so much but the small changes like stupid dialogue options keeps putting me off. I was gonna go for the guy but chose Kassandra after being told she was the "canon" option.

Kassandra voice actor literally is great in everything she does in this game.

I like how in AC Valhalla, Eivor and Kassandra wind up hanging out together at the tavern after solving whatever was going on at the Isle of Skye, and this particular word had Eivor quite tickled for some reason.

She really elevated that game, the story itself isn't anything amazing but she's great

Kassandra? Possibly the greatest video game girl of all time? I think yes.

Make sure to pay off your house right away so that Tom Nook doesn't keep collecting interest, and make sure to play the game occasionally so your town doesn't grow weeds in it.

I love Alexios.

And also Hammer charge plus things that lower charge time to spam the shit out of it.

I'm not a completionist, but I'd like to do more than just the main quest
