Is it a surprise that so many Gen Z stepped up and made their voice heard?

While I appreciate AOCs position when it comes to the current mid terms, I think shes in for a rude awakening if she thinks this trend holds.

People tend to become more conservative when they get older and have money. Just because the boomers die off doesnt mean right wing politics will.

Yes and No.

The republican party is going so far right socially that it will deter alot of moderate voters from going red. I'm one of em. The older I get the more I disagree with some of the stuff the left wing proposes, but theres just no way I can ever vote for a white nationalist bible thumper party.

Yes it will. It's just that the "conservative" Overton Window moves a little slower, and lags about a generation or two behind the regular one.

A hundred years from now, the huge social debate is probably going to be over single-family housing or private cars or something.

"Out of touch" comes in many varieties. For instance, you can be viewed as out of touch with the whole "you turn conservative as you get older" when that has mostly been shifted due to modern understandings of politics. Liberals/socialists/etc. don't become more conservative, but Libertarians start identifying as conservative as they age. It's just that AnCaps were lumped with Liberals prior to the 70's, which is when the saying comes from. It is aged out, continuing to tout it is out of touch.

Maybe its different in Canada. A bunch of my friends started as NDP supporters (our really far left wing party) but the ones who have become financially stable in life have switched up to the Conservative party which is our version of Republicans. And the majority of my friends are still in their 20s.

Like I said I dont consider myself right wing, and have been happy with the USs midterms (Arizona is gonna look damn fine in purple instead of red) I just know Ive heard the once the old people die off thing before and it never seems to be 100 % true.

Yeah, the only truth to it is that rich people and white people tend to live longer than other demographics and also tend to be more conservative. Generally though, people's ideologies don't radically change with age.

It's kind of crazy what happens when Democrats do even just a little bit of what their base wants them to do though! They should maybe try that more, lest those Gen Zers get disillusioned and stop turning out in such numbers. Demographics isn't quite destiny.

I keep hearing this talking point like it means something lmao.

No one my age owns a house like our parents and grandparents did at our ages. None of us have paid off our college debt. Most of us do not have health insurance. Most of us are just now paying off our first non-rust bucket car. We're the poorest generation of Americans in 100 years and let me fucking tell you all I've seen in the last 5 years is a bunch of Millennials getting more and more left leaning. We're very, very tired of the status quo and getting the shit kicked out of us because of what a bunch of old fucks think the world should be like. Literally *no one* I know has aged into conservatism, but plenty of people who started out there as a result of being raised in conservative households have become disenfranchised with the Republican party and started moving left

But, a followup to my last post. I don't doubt that eventually the Republican party will swing back around and become more relaxed on social issues and focus more on economic issues. If they do that, they will reel in ALOT of moderate democrats...THAT will be a red wave.

I've said this many times and I'll say it again, the ideal republican is Kasich. He's not extreme in any of his social views. He's pro LGBT rights, he's mixed on guns - he's against assault weapons, pro handguns. He's anti-abortion, thats his only real flaw, but he opposed a 6-week abortion ban twice, so theres that. Dude just lacks any charisma and personality. But if a guy like him comes around with clinton or obama swag, he'd get elected fasho.

It makes sense for 18-30 years olds to be Democrats, especially during this most recent cycle.

I am speaking in extreme stereotypes here, but I feel it holds true... Younger millennials and older GenZ are still living at home, and for the most part, are living in suburban and rural America because they cannot afford to live in the city. They largely still live at home, so inflation and the rising costs of living to no hit them as hard as it's hitting their 55 and 65 year old parents.

So all the Republicans rhetoric on how terrible inflation is, how expensive everything has become, and the crime rates are in the cities fall on deaf ears.

So they gravitate towards social issues. Abortion and LGBTQ+ rights. And the last thing young people want is being told what they can and can't do. So they reject Republican stances that are potentially taking away rights.

Idk, the dude seems pretty knowledgeable about the stuff if you look at some of the replies. Either way, while it is up from the usual 20%, I would hardly call barely over a quarter of the eligible electorate showing up an incredible turnout.

the commonly heard "people get more conservative as they get older" is bullshit.

people just get louder when they get older. society becomes more liberal and they seem like a dinosaur stuck in the past.

"old fashioned"

"traditional"

no one, in their old age, is like "i supported same-sex marriage for 80 years, but NOW ive changed my mind."

I dunno. As I get into my thirties I kind of feel I don't deserve rights and is only fair to strip me of them and all bodily autonomy. It's just my getting fiscally conservative you see. I also now kick homeless people instead of helping them and shout at addicts instead of feeling sympathy for another human being.

That, combined with today's 18-30 year olds aren't going to all of a sudden do a 180 on social issues like abortion and LGBTQ+ rights.
