And I can't take soccer seriously as long as they are used to decide a winner if necessary. And no amount of appealing to popularity of the sport as a whole is going to change my mind.

When it's seen as an acceptable outcome most of the time and when ties are broken in the lamest way possible when necessary? No.

Your solution is prolly golden goal/sudden death but it's proven all it did was slow down the tempo of the game because teams would refrain from being aggressive on the attack cause they didn't want to get scored on so they would "park the bus"

Honestly pk's aren't so bad, it's adds more drama and suspense to the game. Or better yet who on england is gonna do the bottle job this year.

Penalty kicks are kind of weird because in most cases the goalie cannot react fast enough to be skilled. they either have to guess the right side or the kicker must have a tell.

But you can't expect players to run like that for much more than 120 minutes if the game has to be decided

if you hate shootouts you'd fucking hate how major league soccer used to do it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRITqS6WEn0

I this this is neat, but people are saying if the players were more skilled they would score nearly all of the time.

OH SHIT SOMEBODY ALREADY MENTIONED THIS

Honestly I think championship soccer matches should allow infinite substitutions to nix the fatigue argument and or if necessary start taking players off the field in extra time.

I'll never understand how big events in a team sport bases around 11 v 11 can end in a series of one on one encounters.

Flopping exists in every sport.
They do it in the nba and nhl.
At least in football/soccer they now use VAR to see if players are guilty of diving.

I think FIBA tournaments give out the equivalent of a red card if basketball players are caught flopping but I'm not 100% sure.

Flopping in soccer dramatically lessens in the post-season. Which is the only soccer worth watching anyway.

Pks are not easy either.
A lot of pressure goes into taking them.

When MLS first started they tried to "Americanize" it by having things like a countdown clock and using methods to resolve tied (or as we say in Britain drawn) games even for league matches.

But all of that went down like a cold plate of sick to all the traditionalist FOOTBALL fans.

So after going almost bankrupt MLS decided to drop all their attempts to "Americanize" the sport and adopt the International Football Association Board (IFAB) rules and since then the MLS has flourished.

What do you expect them to do? Play on until somebody scores? Which was actually a way of settling matches in England during the 1940's. In 1946 a match between Stockport County and Doncaster Rovers lasted 3 hours and 23 minutes. They had to stop when the sun set and it was too dark to play on as floodlights didn't exist then. But it was dropped a few months after that game as nobody liked that rule.

They tried "The Golden Goal and " The Silver Goal". With Golden Goal when a team scored in Extra Time it was game over. No one liked it so they tried Silver Goal where if a team scored in Extra Time the game didn't end there and then but ended at the end of the half (period).

No penalty kicks are fine for settling matches.

You are in the minority for not liking them.
