Both are great, but books >>> movies. There's much more depth and such in the books and I didn't like some of the changes in the movies. I didn't like like how they treated Faramir, for example. Elrond is a racist prick (a self hating one too since he also has mannish blood and relatives including his own brother). Aragorn is reluctant to be king instead of wanting to prove himself. Wormtongue and Denethor are cartoonishly evil (seriously how would trust a guy who looks like WT?). Gimli is a buffoon. Legolas is ridiculously OP. Elves being a Helm's Deep. The ghosts just winning the battle at Minas Tirith. And no scouring of the Shire.

the books are what got me into fantasy as a genre when i read them as a kid. they are absolutely one of my favorite things in the world.

the movies were okay.

This. You really have to appreciate the scope of the movies and the efforts of the actors, but the changes were often kind of dumb. The books (or really book since it was intended to be a singular work in three volumes) are meditative in a way.
