Is it fair?

Basically.. Imagine for a moment that you are an apolitical soccer player who has been preparing for this for the past 4 years and has no clue about what's about to transpire.

And because of the actions of your government that have nothing to do with you, that's it, from one day the next your career is over.

Thousands of innocent Ukrainians are being killed by Russia. Why the fuck should anyone care about some replaceable soccer player?

Russia isn't welcome on the world stage; period. It's better this way.

I feel bad for the clean athletes who have worked their whole lives to get to this level, but considering Putin uses athletes as propaganda and what happened with Kamila Valieva at the Olympics, a time out is well deserved.

If you are a soccerplayer and your government attacked another country right now, you would find it fair for you to have your career end becuase of what other people are doing even if you have literally nothing to do with it?

There is no such thing as an apolitical person.

Even taking a 'neutral' stance is STILL taking a stance.

There are consequences for your leader's actions.

They don't like it? Too bad, it's too late to do anything about it.

Try again next time.

It may not be fair to a truly innocent Russian soccer player. But we can't allow nations who attack others for no reason, to play sports with everyone

And this gives more pressure on Russian people to overthrow their government

What I meant by apolitical is someone who has no idea about his presidents plans.
And i don't think the players support Putin, so.. Thats my point.

Must be a nice rock they live under, then.

Or, they don't support Putin? Great, just too bad nothing can be done about it. Thems the breaks. There is NO WAY they are going to Qatar for World Cup 2022

The problem is a lot of the athletes do support Putin. He signs their pay checks since most Russian athletes are either paid by the government for individual sports , or paid by one of Putins cronies who own the teams for team sports.

In what universe is this possible? Everyone in Russia knows exactly what's going on, and knew their government was egregiously fucking up back in 2014 when Crimea was annexed.

considering that a large amount of the top teams in the world would flat out refuse to play id say it'd be impossible for them to compete.

Every facet of Russian society should feel pressure to take those in power to account.

Athletes are no exception. But, Alexander Ovechkin is thanking his fucking lucky stars he's in North America right now.

I mean, that's how national sports just are. You're representing and being represented by your country in international soccer.

And their career wouldn't be over. While the world cup can be a good stage to show off your skills, these players make most of their money and time playing in club football, so no one's career is being ruined.

Like, this is completely different than the bad choice of not listening or watch Russian media and art due to the war. Those are individualistic events, while the purpose of the world cup is literally to represent your country.

You'd have a point if like the English premier league was stopping Russian players from playing for their club team. But that's not what's happening.

I also wonder if Putin even thought this part through with how proud he is of the athletes of his country its so strange that he decided to go through with something that would now likely ban the russian team from any international events forever

I hate it for the individual athlete but support the ban. Not every Russian is on board with what Putin is doing. Despite that there should be consequences. Sucks for them, but it's even worse for Ukraine and their people.
