because the people making them aren't very good at what they do

Because Game Freak has proven themselves completely inept at handling 3D and especially console game development.

the above reasons plus the increasing infantilization of the playerbase. major drops in difficulty, more and more handholding, no more rivals who are actually imposing or engaging. they really think kids are dumb and soft, but we all started playing games way fucking harder than pokemon when we were like 6, so i don't know what it's all about

When we were six we didn't have mobile games.

Last I read, they literally design the game specifically to compete for the attention of small children who would rather be playing gacha shit on their parent's phone. >_>

Pokemon is a game made for kids. Pokemon R/B/Y and Pokemon G/S/C were all extremely easy. You can beat the entire game using a single bug Pokemon. Just because your rival isn't a total asshole like Gary / Silver is, doesn't mean they're not imposing or engaging. I'll give you that Hau is annoying but both Hop and Marnie are great rivals if you played those games.

Casuals won and we're all suffering for it.

I don't even think Hau was that bad... The only rivals I think are awful are your friends/rivals in XY... They are just annoying and worthless...

It was a different market. Games back in our days had to be hard for "replay value" and because games were being rented s they wanted to make sure it was hard to beat to eventually get the kids to "buy" the game. Now it's all about making the players feel good at what they're doing, hence why games are easier now than ever.

Because da hardcore pokemon fans are adults and crave rated M pokemon games

Cmon gamefreak, introduce an adult(NOT SEXUAL YOU FREAKS) version of pokemon with real violence and blood and war and just dark stuff already

What 6 year old is going to know enough about the game to use a bug pokemon, let alone actually want to use a bug pokemon and not "WOW COOL TYPHLOSHION" all the time?

Without having watched the video, does it basically boil down to we grew up, so everything thats new and different that younger people enjoy makes me weirdly angry at something that isnt targeted at me?

No, he actually makes solid points.

One of them being that the old games were more abstract rather than trying to look super realistic so we glossed over the fact that all the towns only had 5 buildings and a couple people walking around.

When you have graphics that are 3D and look more realistic, the flaws become more apparent.

pokemon can barely run on the switch without a shit ton of frame drops and micro freezes plus gamefreak is as lazy as they get lol

if it were developed on another platform it would be able to support realistic looking pokemon and bigger worlds and such

They don't know what they want to do with the gameplay loop. The want to make it so a toddler can win, but still keep needlessly complex systems for the adults who play. Instead of finding a middle ground where the adults can have some control, they refuse to allow even basic shit like deciding how you gain EXP.

The games are horribly optimized even without consideration of having the potential financial backing of the largest single franchise on earth. Gamefreak is an antiquated studio trying to keep up with a cycle that simply isn't feasible, and they've done no actual work to truly futureproof things. They either refuse to get outside help, or TPC refuse to give them more funding.

They've completely tossed away the mass connectivity aspect, so these other features like Home are semi-useless. They could develop their own customizable battle simulator to reach the Pokemon Showdown audience, but they're again too antiquated.

The friends and rival in X/Y weren't that bad. The friends only follow you up to the third town or so and pretty much never see them again.
