Long after Blockbuster disappeared physical DVD rental stores were still absolutely thriving in small towns, can confirm from experience. I wouldn't be surprised if the Family Video in Berlin, Pennsylvania was still open actually

Netflix did not stream movies in 2004 when it first became a thing. They mailed you DVDs

The convenience of streaming is what did Blockbuster in, though. Netflix was the first major company to get on that, and Blockbuster stubbornly stuck to its guns and paid for it.

The Netflix DVD mail service still existed along with streaming up through at least 2014 before I bought a Roku device, don't know when it was axed though

I loved video stores and I miss them. It was nice asking the store workers for suggestions, or just talking about movies. Also it was fun to look through the sections and find weird movies to try. I get the ease of use and whatnot, but I still miss video stores.

It still exists. There's a separate fee for it, instead of being bundled together anymore.

I miss game rentals.
I mean if they came back nowadays it wouldn't mean much because games suck now but still, we had something nice for a while.

Considering the price of games, I'm kind of surprised they couldn't survive off that alone.

It might be in a similar situation soon with gamepass and other subscription services becoming the norm, but it's a bit weird that there wasn't a more affordable alternative to playing new games for a while.

I used to work at Hollywood Video. And when it closed, I was wondering how long it would take for Blockbuster to follow suit. Unsurprisingly it just took over a year later.

What did surprise me is that it wasn't until the pandemic when Family Video closed.
