Accept new offer?

Same company, different department.

If I stay-
Im one of the informal leads here (in practice, not in title nor pay) and one of the top candidates for this groups management position for when the current manager moves on. Current manager has been grooming me for his replacement, and hes planning on leaving in the next 5 years. Should I get promoted to manager, the pay difference is ~30% compared to my current pay.

If I accept new job-
Its a titled lead position with a ~10% raise. Its in a new department, so my reach will be greater. I get to broaden my knowledge and open up other management opportunities. The work is similar as my current group, so I could always come back and apply for management position should my current manager leave. However, I must stay in this new position for minimum of 3 years.

Kind of tough decision

I would be leaning toward the new job. You say you SHOULD get the promotion in your department, but Im sure youve seen enough workplace politics to know that the most deserving person doesnt always get the promotion. They might even outright hire a new person from outside and keep you where you are. My point is that I dont think its good to bank on something potentially working out because, in theory, its the right thing. If you have a guarantee of instant upward mobility, I would consider that, even though its stressful to leave the people youre accustomed to working with.

Generally looks better on your resume to diversify so go for it if you get the actual title. That will be more beneficial both immediately and in the long term compared to waiting for a potential opening on your current team.

Thanks for the honest and good feedback. My current manager said he cant put me up for promotion (large company office politics), and that he thinks I shouldnt make decisions based on what he might do (i.e., he gave me feedback that I shouldnt stay in the hopes that he would leave).

What I would hate to see is that he leaves in 3 years and Im ineligible to apply

Yup. Thats the corporate policy for us. You cant move to a different group until at least 3 years in the current role, unless its mission critical (as approved by directors and HR).

Thats what Im thinking as well: diversify, open more doors.

This makes the most sense to me. I feel like I make a lot of mistakes in life, but Ive had to learn the hard way that sometimes jumping on an immediate opportunity is the only way to move forward. Being patient is a virtue, but the workforce has SO much competition for every position (especially higher up positions) that every single day the company probably gets dozens of applications for the very position that youre waiting on and some of them are so desperate that they would take the position for less than you would expect to get for it.

Take the new position. If you're doing the responsibilities of a lead without the pay or privileges, then you've already established you're comfortable being exploited by your current management. Moving to another department gives you the chance to make a new impression.

the reason everyones leaving their jobs in 2022 is weve all collectively realized that the way to actually get raises and move ahead is by finding a new job

id say look at other companies. 3 years in seat is stupid. that is about how often you should be changing employers (if you want to be paid you worth)

Yeah I would argue the policy of making people wait 3 years before being eligible to change departments is an obvious way theyre trying to limit promotions and pay people less than theyre worth

Theres very little reason for me to leave. Company has treated me nicely so far, pay is reasonable, benefits are extraordinary, and is also extremely stable (government contractor of a proprietary tech that cannot be provided elsewhere). With a brand new baby in the family, its not the time to change companies.

I would argue that with a baby, getting significantly more pay is a great reason to change companies

its why I switched jobs earlier this year with a 3 month old baby at home

Different strokes for different people. Im probably never leaving this company. I doubt any company today can match the benefits Im getting.

Anywho back on hand, I guess the right thing to do is accept the new position.

Only thing Id suggest is consider the people. How much do you like the people youre around now as opposed to the people you will be around. There might be some unknowns in all of that, but its worth considering.

I like the people Im around a lot. I have no clue about this other department. The first line and second line managers have been extremely nice and welcoming, even thanking meafter the interview for my time.

In that case, take the new position and maintain the relationship with your manager. It just might all work out perfectly.
