it's basically a membership fee, Elon is just avoiding using that term. I guarantee that unless the whole idea completely crashes and burns, in a few months there will be a huge check vs no check division(more so than now) and unverified people will basically be dismissed entirely, the same way we do here with 3 karma accounts.

I honestly can't really think of a good way for this to work.

Either he removes all checkmarks and starts again. If it's successful there's a big backlog to verify. If it's not there's an obvious indication that people aren't paying to retain it and there's going to be a lot who won't.

Or he keeps verified people as is. But then people will wonder why they should pay and adoption will likely be extremely low.
