Kroger to pay $180K after firing workers who refused to wear logo allegedly resembling Pride flag.

As part of a settlement, the company will pay the two employees, who court documents said both believe homosexuality is a sin, more than $70,000 each.

The settlement was reached earlier this week and announced Thursday by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the federal agency that investigates allegations of job discrimination on the basis of legally protected classes, such as race, sex or religion.

Kroger denied in court filings that it fired the women as a result of discrimination about their religious beliefs, and said the apron uniforms, which had a rainbow-colored heart, were not intended to express support for the LGBTQ community.

I kind of agree with the ruling in theory, though I find the two women loathsome. But the "rainbow" they took issue with was this:

Looks like Kroger's marketing team pulled one of their toddler kids from daycare to draw their multibillion dollar franchise's logo.

Like, they started off okay at the right, but then they.... flat-out gave up on the left.

I get that they were cutting costs, but come ooooooooon.

In a way, I'm glad it happened this way. Would rather bigots be removed from the equation instead of faking support for LGBT communities. It's still technically wrongful termination, as you can't discriminate against someone based on their religion. Ironic that discrimination was a core reason why they were terminated. $70,000 is a small price to pay for a large chain like Kroger.

That's the logo they took issue with? Well, no one ever accused bigots of being critical thinkers or actually smart.

After reading that article, no they shouldnt have been paid. The company did not fire them due to their religious beliefs. The uniform redesign was not done to support lgbt folks which means that believing homosexuality to be a sin is not an excuse to not wear the uniform.
