Obduction looks a lot more contemporary compared to Riven, which plays a lot like classic Myst (Never heard of Myst? basically for those who aren't aware, Myst is the precursor to all those Escape Room games and you explore a 2.5D environment solving puzzles to progress). There were also a lot of other games like Myst both before and after, but they really nailed the atmosphere and graphics, imo. Obduction reminds me more of Talos Principal, etc, which is fine because those games are basically Myst. Love to see them bringing back filming real actors in the spirit of old PC games.

I was really impressed with the production quality on the newest Myst remake. I wish I'd finished it before it left Game Pass

Seriously. Myst had promise but Riven was the delivery of that promise.

i still need to finish 4 and start 5. i've had them since the kickstarter...

I never played Myst, but I don't get its mass appeal. It's just going through pretty backgrounds doing puzzles, right? >_> I need something a little more engaging

I could recommend you a bunch of games

Or you could just play Myst and form your own opinion :) How do you know that you don't like it if you've never played? Granted there are probably literally thousands of quite unfun Myst knockoffs which may have colored your opinion.

There's also a bunch of games I would never recommend in this setting lol

Myst was one of the first PC games I played as a kid. I don't think I ever even completed a relevant task or anything. Just kind of walked around the island taking in the cool view, mashing buttons and levers randomly.

Those are the two main categories of games I don't usually recommend, yes

and sports games

I feel like it's kind of genius how Myst feels like "proof of concept" and in fact the lore considers it exactly the same. A lot of Myst contains Ages that Atrus wrote experimentally, and if they feel a bit bland and unlivable, it's because their in-game creator made them so.

But I definitely agree that Riven feels far more like a "complete world".

I played a bit of Obduction but when I got to the point where I could travel to other areas it felt too complicated and I dropped it

I wasn't really a fan of Myst. there wasn't any clear way to progress besides trial and error which gets boring real fast.

You can find the solution to pretty much every puzzle through gameplay, IIRC

Anyway, the last time I played Riven about four years back the game crashed about halfway through and I hadn't saved for an hour so that stopped that run.

The remake is a whole nother ballgame. It's not just painted backdrops.

It's got a pretty cool concept to the story and some nice surrealism if you're into that sort of thing, but yeah basically a puzzle game. Lots of games have done it better, but that's mainly because they were influenced by Myst. It's a classic.

One of the things to remember about Myst's appeal at the time is that it came out in 1993.

Age of the SNES, the Genesis, the TG-16.

There were games doing FMV at the time on the PC, but Myst was really the first one to deliver a solid experience via the CD-ROM format, whereas others at their time were either interactive movies or just trash. It was essentially the first successful implementation of a CD-ROM game.

Looking back on it now, it seems a bit simple, but it is nearly 30 years old.

Same. I didn't understand that game. I'm not good at puzzle games like Myst

Myst had a profound effect on me growing up, enough so that I made sure to grab the books as they released. The worlds of the D'ni fascinated me. Visualizing the novels became so much greater due to the game, during a formative time. Tremendous stuff.

The visual and sound design on it is honestly incredible

I tried obduction and LOVED the premise and intro...but I quickly got lost and confused of what to do once I dived into it
