I never knew how loud guns are until I shot them. I assume during training, soldiers use hearing protection because why not but in a combat zone, do they use hearing protection?

If they use hearing protection, how do they hear orders and communicate with other soldiers? If they dont use hearing protection, how do they protect their hearing, amongst all the gunfire?

Never see soldiers use hearing protection in movies, and soldiers in movies can still hear everything this seems unrealistic.

Most times they don't. That comes with the territory.

Historically, no.

Some units in the Marine Corps are just now starting to issue out Peltors, which are hearing protection with built in microphones for radio communications.

As well theyve started issuing suppressors. They dont shoot subsonic ammo though, so even suppressed its still not great for your hearing, still way better than shooting unsuppressed though.

Not sure about the other branches, but the Army is usually ahead of the Marine Corps with most things.

Do they do pass through of non loud noises so situational awareness isnt affected?

Im surprised that noise cancelling ear buds with comms arent standard issue. Maybe were a few years away from that.

Ever watch a movie with soldiers giving hand signs to others to signify their movements or actions? That's not so they're being stealthy like hollywood would have you believe. It's because they literally cannot hear others during a barrage of gunfire.
