basically everyone else always acknowledged that the quality started declining well before that

I'd imagine it's easier to detect the quality dips when you're binging like me. You go from fairly consistent for about 3 seasons (tho season 1 has still been the best) to some really out-of-place dumb ass scene every few episodes, to the dumbass scenes becoming very prevalent.

It's better explained in the books, but you can assume the same is true in the show. The tl;dr is that he has power because he's an extremely popular figure among the common folk, is no slouch when it comes to playing the game of thrones himself, and Cersei's stupidity.

The long and short of is that the Faith of the Seven had somewhat of a revival thanks to the war. This caused a religious movement of common folk who caused themselves sparrows. Outraged at the murder of septas/septons, flouting of holy laws such as breaking the guest rights at the Red Wedding, and the burning of septs, they armed themselves as best they could. The High Sparrow - as you might guess by the name - rose to prominence in this movement and eventually became its leader.

When the Most Devout were to select a new High Septon, these sparrows stormed in and took over the meeting. They forced the Devout to choose the High Sparrow. He immediately sells the fine gold and jewels that used to decorate the Sept of Baelor and donates the money to the poor, winning over the smallfolk. Cersei notes that he is far more intelligent and shrewd that then previous one, meaning assassination would be more difficult. And if he were assassinated, the sparrows and more religous smallfolk would likely riot.

But by far the biggest reason they become an issue is because Cersei is a bonafide, drool-in-a-bucket moron. I forget how it goes down in the show, but in the book the High Sparrow refuses to bless Tommen's coronation. When she goes to him to secure it, he manipulates her into restoring the Faith Militant, a military branch of the church that had been outlawed after they rebelled against the crown about a century and a half before. So then instead of a bunch of commoners with hand axes and pitchforks, he can suddenly arm them with swords and armor.

I thought he'd send a plague to winter fell or something actually useful. This dude is absolutely the biggest loser In this whole show. From his intro he's just brooding and taking L after L.

Season 5 is when the writing goes downhill for Jaime, Sansa, & Arya

While that's almost certainly true, my point was that D&D, unsurprisingly, went with the most surface-level interpretation of the Sparrows imaginable.

At least Jonathan Pryce made the most of what he was given. I didn't waste space in my memory banks for most of S5, but he was definitely the highlight.

First instance of course correcting in the show. Drone Season 5 was such a disaster they had to basically end the Dorne storyline very quickly.

They ignored the books Dorne storyline about Arianna Martell, and ofcourse they thought of easing dorne in with familiar faces so Jaime and Bronn infiltrated Dorne rather than the much better Arianne Martell storyline.

Windy Winter book gonna release soon

I do wonder how much of Dorne being garbage was due to their choice of filming location. The area they chose was a historical site and had very strict restrictions on what they could do. So instead of Bronn and Jamie sneaking in in the middle of the night, they did it in broad daylight.

Ramps up from 1 to 4
5 is meh
6 is better than 5, but not as good as 1-4
7 and 8 are terrible.

Honestly I think the late seasons suck too...but I don't blame them not using the book stuff. Frankly most of the book plots would be so separated and screwed up I feel like it'd make people frustrated.

Like...you'd basically have half the cast doing nothing for 2 seasons and then the reverse

Honestly, that already started in season 3. The Robb, Theon, and Stannis arcs were terrible that season.

Of all the characters the show ruined - and they ruined almost all of them - Euron Greyjoy is almost certainly the one they ruined the most. If people who would argue otherwise would almost certainly place him in the top three. Euron in the book is essentially a manipulative, sociopathic sorcerer pirate. The only time they even remotely resemble each other is when book Euron is faking a persona to appeal to the Iron Islanders.

I'm so upset. This show was so good and now it's so stupid. That was the worst episode yet.

To give you a comparison, this is how Euron won over the Islanders in the book:

Euron is a WWE character in the show. Quite a lot of wrestling fans enjoyed the show version!

Sadly, the character Euron Greyjoy does not make an appearance in the HBO series Game of Thrones. There's a candy-ass stand-in named Urine Greyjoy, sure, but no Euron.

Aemond in House of Dragons is more like Euron than Urine ever was simply due to the fact that Aemond wears a fucking eyepatch.

I mean, it's all been downhill since season 1 since that was the best one, but it was a gradual decline through season 4. Season 5 was a very noticeable dip and 6 hasn't been any better.

Well, Season 8 holds that title sadly....

More often than not, S5 and S6 genuinely, deeply pissed me off with how bad some of the episodes were, and how badly they butchered certain characters / plotlines. S6 was at least redeemed at the end; Ep 9 was quite good despite its flaws, and Ep 10 was one of the best in the series.

S7 might have technically been worse, but the damage had already been done and book-readers like myself were completely in uncharted territory by that point, so it was easier to step back and watch the trainwreck unfold rather than remain deeply invested in it. And if S7 was when the train finally jumped the track and started careening into the gorge, S8 was the spectacular, fiery, bone-crunching crash. At that point I'd completely detached myself from the show and reacted to just about everything I saw with bitter laughter.
