As opposed to a gendered term. Wonder if it's because it sounds more mature, or if it's a way to be more inclusive (ie lgbt folks won't have to out themselves).

The terms "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" come off as immature the older you get. "Partner" just sounds a lot better.

Whenever I hear someone refer to someone as their partner it sounds more serious and long term.

It's mostly used for long-term relationships. Like you've been together several years, but aren't married. Like you haven't made that leap yet, but you know you love each other the most and want to stay together. I dunno, that's how I see it. >_>

Yeah I agree. It's a good intermediary that goes beyond bf/gf if you're not married.
