I forget what comedian said this, but they griped about how Achilles' mom was portrayed as lazy for not dipping his heel into the immortal goo, and yet no one chides Achilles for not wearing armor on his literal only weak spot after his mom made him 99% invincible?

And Diomedes was the real beast of the Illiad. Only mortal to beat the shit out of two gods in one battle.

Did Achilles even know about his weakness?

Did his mom ever tell him that he's vulnerable in his heel?

I'm not sure if his heel was even a vulnerability in The Iliad. I feel like that heel detail is from later myths, and in The Iliad he was just a really good warrior.

I always found it distasteful that Achilles is so enraged by Hector killing Patroclus that he desecrates Hector's corpse by dragging it around the city. Patroclus was the one wearing Achilles's armor and making himself a target.

I get that Achilles had some homosexual pederasty going down there, but still. Avenge Patroclus by killing Hector, but to desecrate his body was fucked up.

There's actually no mention in the Iliad or the Odyssey of Achilles being invincible except for his heel. That came from later myths. Hell, all we know is that Paris shot him, not even where.

That's actually one thing that makes the Iliad so interesting. The heroes are depicted as often times more deplorable than the villains. Agamemnon is definitely less honorable than Priam.

I've never read The Iliad before and tried reading it a few months ago. Twenty-odd pages pages of Achilles moping around his hollow ships whining that Agamemnon isn't giving him enough girl-slaves as a reward certainly wasn't the most compelling read by modern standards.

I read it back in 2018. So good.

I read it recently. Didn't really care for it that much. Felt like it flattened a lot of the characters, simplified the sexual dynamics, and depicted the sex slaves in a very dubious way in a (failed) attempt to make the lovebird heroes seem less vile for owning sex slaves. Also kinda janky plotting with story threads that appear out of nowhere and get randomly dropped, like the book expects you to know the original myths and fill in the blanks on your own. I could go on but I don't want to be too negative.
