Thats definitely my favorite verse on the entire album tho. This is just such an amazing piece of storytelling, it really transports you into his life and rather than just being entertained is like having a mind meld with a truly singular artist.

Moneys Trees is for me the greatest Rap song of the 2010s. Song will literally never sound dated, it is immune to aging poorly.

One thing that strikes me on these listens is the humility Kendrick demonstrates by basically structuring his entire flow so that its a preamble to the Rock verse. Ill never forget the first time I heard that song and it really was this smooth smooth bop that gradually builds until youre just brought into such a shattering reality

To Pimp a Butterfly is a phenomenal album indeed, I hadnt listened to it nearly enough before. I do think that in particular, The Blacker The Berry is possibly the best Kendrick song Ive listened to (missing newest and section.80), but theres just such a huge level of personal resonance for me in GKMC.

From the age of 6 until 11 I lived in a neighborhood in Topeka, KS called Avondale, which was where the projects were. I went to a school where there was me, a boy named Brandon, and another girl named Cassandra who were the only 3 white kids in school. I lived in a two bedroom rental house, but you could see the high rises where most of my friends lived from my backyard and it only took 10 or so minutes to walk over there.

Everyone was just poor as shit so you kinda grouped into friends based on how you could try the most video games or whatever right? Like you kinda just bond over how much more fun you can have if youre friends with so-and-so. I had both Nintendo consoles and a pretty big collection of Gameboy games thanks to my uncle who would hook my brothers and I up for birthdays and Christmas. Also a ton of sports equipment that my brother no longer used since he was the one who got the interests supported and got updated stuff regularly.

Anyway, there were about 5 of us in my main group, and we were pretty much always together outside of school until dinner time. One of the friends was a 4th grader named Ronald who went by RJ, when the rest of us were in 3rd so he kinda always came across as the leader and in disposition was just such a kind hearted person who was quiet but world weary and wise in a way that I admired so much.

Another kid was named Charles, who was the loud, runty brat of the group that we probably were a little too mean to because he would get so upset and cry about what seemed like most things. He was also really light skinned and had smooth hair so people outside our group teased him that his dad was white. I liked Charles cuz I could kinda see that he was just a sensitive kid that wanted to fit into his own community, you know he lived in the same building as all these people constantly tearing him down for something he couldnt do anything about, plus he was the only kid that cried more than me. He was also really good at baseball, since he could run so fast even a little hit would get him on base.

RJ and Charles always seemed at odds with each other, and I never understood it when we were all together. Im sure you guys will get it right away but the big thing was that RJ wanted Charles to stop hanging out with his (RJs) brother. It was a constant argument between them, but despite that you could tell that there was real love between them. Towards the end of fourth grade, Charles started only coming to school part time, either not showing up or just leaving at random times. He wore an earring like pretty much everyone did and he went from the simple gold stud most of us had to some huge shiny shit that he told me cost $200 which was unimaginable to me, I remember asking him what the money looked like and he pulled out a bill and was like two of these.

There was this big argument between those two about it, this was the last time we were all together. RJ was usually quiet and really calm when they argued but Charles told him that he was just jealous that RJs brother was giving him work instead of RJ, and he got so angry and shouted that I dont want to work in Avondale and I dont wanna live at the courtyard when Im 22 (his brothers age obvi)! and Charles basically said how RJs brother told him RJ was a punk for thinking hes better than his home.

I never saw Charles again, and the following summer was the last I was able to really hang with RJ because my mom moved me to a white school where everyone hated me cuz I was from Avondale. That only lasted a few months until she disappeared and my grandpa took us to Arizona tho.

I've tried to get into Kendrick Lamar a few times. Outside of the first 2/3rd of DNA, he doesn't really click with me. But all my friends love him though!
