Not within this galactic cluster
They're still light years away though. The closest one is like 4 lightyears, we aren't going to get to it ever. The entire situation on earth will be way too fucked by the time we need to bail and we won't have the tech by the time that happens in all likelihood.

Cool, so what do you suggest? Should we all just give up and lie down and die? Should we stop having any kind of optimism for the future and just all be grumpy pieces of shit? I'm generally curious as to what you believe your piss poor attitude brings to any discussion.

I suggest we fix the glaring issues threatening the future before we stay dreaming and never awaken from the nightmare.

When you remember that it has been entirely decided for you in a way that's entirely arbitrary (i.e. people who happen to have power dictating which things they happen to have seen have meaning) and that you're just marching in step with those dictations, yes. I'd say that's arbitrary and meaningless. You wouldn't even notice a "Starry Night" if it were just some random person's deviant art entry, you value it because you were told to.

This is all your FAR MORE ARBITRARY definition. Your opinion does not outweigh millenia of human exploration of the world we live in.

YOU see no value in culture or humanity. THATS YOU. I'm sorry you didn't have a great family life, but maybe take a moment away from the keyboard next time you think its smart to say that people's children should be forgotten.

So we're dreaming AND in a nightmare? So the nightmare isn't real and we can just wake up from it and life is actually easy? Whew, that's a relief.

Technology isn't some bottomless magic bag of free gifts. Our planet's resources are finite, and there may never be sufficient to get enough of us off this planet to survive and thrive beyond our own atmosphere, never mind the solar system.

Lots of depressed Nihilists in this thread, sheesh.

Try watching PBS spacetime on YouTube. The last episode was about launching multiple probes with cameras out to about 450 AUs from the Sun. At that distance, the Sun acts like a giant cosmic lense and we'll be able to take detailed pictures and maps of Alien wolds. We are living in an exciting time when it comes to major scientific advancements.

We've already ruined the oceans and we're going to run out of oil one of these days, so human civilization won't last long enough to grow out of this infancy.

It's because the dream and the nightmare are one and the same. You may look towards the future but if we continue as we are, we will never reach it. Life is easy, life is hard. The fact that these two ideas yet persist is evidence of how we will always be in the endless dream. If you can never wake, wouldn't that just be a nightmare at one point? If you want to reach the future you must first awaken to reality. That's why I do not think optimism towards the future is a good thing. The time to dream is over. If you want to reach the future, you must ensure there is one. As things stand now, things don't look good. No amount of optimism will change that unless you back it up with your power. I hate pointless dreamers.

The amount of people doing that is severely outweighed by people who only do selfish things. People with money and power who could be reaching for the future but instead destroy the now. Humanity needs to work overtime now, if they ever hope to survive despite this.

It's a legitimate thought.

To be honest, Mankind probably looked more bleak at multiple points in the past thousand years. We survived the Ice Age, the late Bronze Age collapse, the fall of Rome, the Mongol Hordes, Black Plague, the Dark Ages, and World War 2. We keep getting stronger and more advanced.

No one is trying to make flying cars dude. Stop pretending you know more than lord Elon. You could study for a million years and still not be on his level mate.
Actually there are lots of people trying to make flying cars, like the company that flew theirs in Dubai a few days ago. Theyll probably never be as big a thing as sci-fi shows, but saying no one is trying is flat out wrong.

No type 1 is just harnassing the power of your solar systems star and interplanetary travel. If I remember correctly we could be considered around 0.5 to 0.8 on that scale.
