We've known it wasn't flat since Aristotle's time.

Says a lot about Italians when you choose to be represented by CC.

Italians being represented by Columbus has to do with weird historical reasons.

Italians were heavily discriminated in America during the 1800s. Columbus was seen as a quasi founder of the United States due to his so called "discovery" of the Americas. Columbus was revered in the United States during the 1800s (for example, there was a statue of him outside of Congress from about 1840 to 1950). Many Italians tried to link themselves to Columbus to show they were also American.

In the late 1800s a bunch of Italians were lynched in New Orleans. The president of the US at the time then decided to declare Columbus Day a holiday (originally a one time thing, but it eventually became a yearly thing) to try and placate Italian Americans and the Kingdom of Italy (which was threatening diplomatic actions due to the lynching). So in a weird way, Columbus Day actually started out as a "woke" holiday to try to ease tensions with an oppressed minority.

Things have obviously changed, but I'm guessing a lot of people want to keep Columbus Day due to "tradition" even though the circumstances are much different from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
