I loved the combat and exploration of Fallout I really did. I also enjoyed that it wasn't RPG heavy.

I didn't like the RPG heavy elements of Fallout New Vegas. I also didn't like that New Vegas' buildings were so barren; there was hardly anything to do in there!

I've heard Fallout 3's environment is very fun to explore but how are the buildings? Can you explore them in depth like in Fallout 4?

Fallout 3 is really great setting but the execution is kind of lame. It's set in Washington DC but with few exceptions most locations are very samey. It feels more like exploring generic ruins than historical landmarks a lot of the time.

It'll be hard to accept the mechanical and performance downgrades. I feel like people downplay how much stuff like Ironsights and not having frame drops every 2 seconds matters. Also, capping your level before you're done with the game and making future experience pointless. Though, it doesn't cap as fast with the DLC and I only know the ps3 version, which Im told is the worst one.

I feel like a game that doesn't run as well is harder to enjoy, but they're not wrong about stuff like dialogue mattering more and having better options

3 is an even dumber version of 4 that has even more caves filled with boring levelled loot. if you like bad rpgs like fallout 4 you're going to love it

Judging by your taste, you'd probably love Fallout 76 as well.

Well I'm going to be honest I'm glad I got to play these games at launch cause no way in hell would I even utter that Fo4 was better than new Vegas.

If you like fallout 4 I'd just recommend playing fallout 76.

Going by the reason you dont like NV, then maybe 3 will be better suited. You can follow along a main story that doesnt branch hardly at all, doesnt concern itself with factions, theres no real bother with picking crap up other than guns, armor and ammo. Its basic, but still kinda not. You can roam, but its not nearly as spread out. Map is more convoluted than 4 because sections are locked to the subways, and theres TONS of samey subway. Still a great game and I love all three; 4 being my fave.

Lol @ people dragging 4 by pairing it with 76. Like the reception was even close to the same. You guys are so extra when something doesn't do everything you want it to. You act like the differences between New Vegas and F4 mean everything, but then throw away perceiving way bigger changes as soon as you're supposed to apply the same thinking between 4 and 76. It doesn't make 4 look bad. It just makes you look bad at understanding the series you claim to love.

god no lol.

Fallout 4 was the exact same as every other game. A huge world with barely much to do.

Fallout 3 made its bones by being the only game in town for its time (that game being 'Bethesda-brand post-apocalyptic open world RPG). New Vegas outclassed it in nearly every regard, and Fallout 4 later outclassed it in the few remaining categories.

At this point, I'd say 3's chief value still lies in a handful of interesting / memorable sidequests. I'd say avoid the main quest, but even it too has some decent spots: Tranquility Lane is fun if you have a hankering to be an evil bastard, and Vault 87 is possibly the only vault in the game that's both genuinely creepy and well-designed. I also have fond memories of The Pitt DLC, and Point Lookout can be fun to explore (The Velvet Curtain is one of the game's best quests, but is one of those that you can really only enjoy the first time, especially since prior knowledge makes it very tempting to just skip 2/3rds of the quest).
