IIRC those were mostly done because you'd have to wait months to years for reruns and they wanted to catch new viewers up. Kinda pointless with streaming, on demand, and all that.

I agree clip shows suck but the reason is the haven't needed to do so since DVD box sets became a thing. Before them it was pretty difficult to see previous episodes

People became wise to the technique, so those episodes became more and more unpopular. Modern audiences know a lot more about the concept of filler and budget cuts, so they weren't being fooled anymore.

it kinda sucks that clip shows were a thing because i remember some of them had some pretty good jokes to set up the clips or whatever and to have them buried within a clip show is just criminal since nobody looks them up willingly

The only good clip show I've ever seen was in Legend of Korra, because the cast had a blast making it.

Back in the day you could only watch a show or miss it. With streaming, you can now go back and watch an episode whenever; you don't have to wait for it to be back on the air, so you don't need the clip show to remind everyone what happened up to that point.

Rick and Morty has done a couple clip shows, they're just clips from episodes that don't exist.

the main reason clip shows were ever a thing was because they had 20+ episodes to produce per season contractually and sometimes they'd run out of money in their budget before they made all those episodes, so they'd have to do a clip show to act as low-budget filler/padding. nowadays they just do less episodes per season instead.
