A small amount of politicians will try to align their personal beliefs to their public beliefs with complete overlap. They don't make it far. A larger amount of politicians are those who have overlap between their personal and party's beliefs. However, they won't have 100% overlap. They will take a stance at odds with their personal beliefs to acquire votes. A small amount of politicians are narcissists who lust for power, so to them they actually lack any personal beliefs. As a result they preach whatever their side needs to hear. So the majority will fall in the middle with some overlap. The problem with this is that when you notice contradictions it now becomes impossible to determine which of their statements are aligned with their beliefs. Those are just my thoughts. I'm also not commenting on whether this is good or bad. Just wondering your thoughts on the type of people politicians are underneath.
