A top-of-the-line Russian nuclear-powered submarine has gone missing from its harbor in the Arctic along with its rumored "doomsday weapon," according to multiple reports.
NATO has reportedly warned members that Russia's Belgorod submarine no longer appeared to be operating out of its White Sea base, where it has been active since July. Officials warned that Russia may plan to test Belgorod's "Poseidon" weapons system, a drone equipped with a nuclear bomb that Russia has claimed is capable of creating a "radioactive tsunami," according to Italian media.
The drone can be deployed from the submarine at any time and detonated at a depth of 1 kilometer near a coastal city.
Russian state media has claimed the device can create a 1,600-ft. wave that smashes into the coast and irradiates it.
The 600-ft. submarine was delivered to the Russian Navy in July as part of Russian President Vladimir Putins top-secret program that aims to develop and operate a series of a new class of "super weapons."
Rebekah Koffler, a strategic intelligence expert and author of "Putins Playbook," warned that Russia's use of such a weapon would only come as a last resort "in the event that Russia and the U.S. are in a direct kinetic war and Russia is losing."
Koffler said the device is likely not to be operational until 2027, but Putin may be testing it as a means to intimidate both Ukraine its NATO allies in the West. Putin has warned that Russia's potential use of nuclear weapons is "not a bluff."
Belgorod's location remains publicly unknown as of Monday, a situation that is not particularly surprising to Koffler. Russian submarines have some of the best stealth capabilities in the world and have even entered U.S. waters undetected in the past, according to Koffler.
"There have been times when Russian nuclear-powered attack submarines, armed with long-range cruise missiles, operated undetected for weeks close to U.S. shores," Koffler told Fox News Digital.
One incident in the early 2010s saw a submarine get detected only when it was leaving U.S. waters.
"My colleagues from the Office of Naval Intelligence got a serious dressing down by a four-star general" following the event, Koffler said.

I know Russia has been getting its nose bloodied for the past few months but they do have some technology that should still give us pause.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/10/03/nuclear-weapons-convoy-sparks-fears-putin-could-preparing-test/

A Russian convoy transporting equipment for Russia's nuclear weapons programme has sparked fears that Vladimir Putin could be preparing a test to send a signal to the West.
A train operated by the secretive nuclear division and linked to the 12th main directorate of the Russian ministry of defence was spotted in central Russia over the weekend heading towards the front line in Ukraine.
The pro-Russian Telegram channel Rybar shared the footage showing the large freight convoy hauling upgraded armoured personnel carriers and other equipment.
Konrad Muzyka, a defence analyst specialising in Ukraine, said the 12th directorate operated a dozen central storage facilities for nuclear weapons.
"This is actually a kit belonging to the 12th Main Directorate of the Russian MoD, The Poland-based analyst said. The directorate is responsible for nuclear munitions, their storage, maintenance, transport, and issuance to units."
Mr Muzyka said it could be a signalling to the West that Moscow is escalating," in reference to Vladimir Putin's nuclear war warning last week.
However, the expert stressed that the video in no way shows "preparations for a nuclear release".
Russia expected to test 'weapon of the apocalypse'
It comes as sources told The Times that Nato had sent an intelligence report to its members and allies alerting them to the fact that Russia is expected to test its nuclear-capable torpedo drone Poseidon, possibly in the Black Sea, which it controls.
The Poseidon torpedo, dubbed the weapon of the apocalypse, can be launched from the submarine. According to La Repubblica newspaper, it is about to be tested in the area of the Kara Sea, north of the Russian mainland.
These latest manoeuvres could signal an increasingly desperate Mr Putins willingness to escalate the war following a series of embarrassing defeats on the battlefield, including the loss of a key city in Donetsk and the most recent setbacks in the Kherson region.
According to Pentagon officials, the US is considering how to respond to a range of potential scenarios, including fears that Russia could use tactical nuclear weapons.
Last Friday, at a ceremony in which he announced the illegal annexation of four Ukrainian regions, Mr Putin said Russia would use all available means to defend the areas
It came as the Biden administration's next security assistance package for Ukraine is expected to include four Himars rocket launchers, munitions, mines and mine-resistant vehicles, two sources who had been briefed on the $625 million package told Reuters on Monday.
The package, expected to be announced as soon as Tuesday, is the first since Russia's declared annexation of Ukrainian territory and the second Presidential Drawdown Authority since Ukraine made large battlefield gains in mid-September.
Himars were instrumental in knocking out Russian supply lines and hitting headquarters behind enemy lines ahead of the recent counter attacks by Ukraine.

And then there's this as well.

While it isn't confirmation of anything, I do think Putin wouldn't be above testing a nuclear device to demonstrate to the world "not to fuck with Russia", treaty be damned.

We've had defensive measures for decades, in the event of a nuclear armageddon.

And that's what we publicly know about.

Who knows what the US and it's allies have that aren't public knowledge. Though the same could be said for Russia.

What I think happens is, Russia tests on their own land, they get more sanctions for breaking treaty, the war continues to go poorly then under the guide of "Ukraine's relentless assault of Russian territory(the (illegally) annexed Donbas region), we have no choice but to take drastic measures" and they use a tactical nuclear device against Ukraine.

One would hope that it ends there and we treat Russia and any of its subsequent iterations as North Korea, a hermit state that nobody does business with.

I feel that Russia (or really just Putin) will use the tactical nuke to bait NATO into a response so he can justify starting a nuclear war.

You can cease all diplomat and economic relations with them in all capacity and threaten the same to anyone who doesn't do the same to Russia.

Yes, it would threaten to fracture the global economy, but it's the only viable threat that would have the needed consequence to Russia without responding with nukes of our own.

The other possible threat would be a massive-scale conventional attack, without actually using nukes.

Mind you, there's a very high chance that still leads to using nukes, just less immediately.

A direct NATO attack on Russia would almost guaranteedly result in more Russian nukes being used. Which leads to NATO using nukes.

It's a no-win scenario and very WarGames esque where the only winning move is not to play
