Or was I just a two year practice round?

Its hard enough to make the playoffs in MLB, I can understand the the celebration. Plus baseball is such a high variance sport that once youre in the tournament theres at least a decent chance of going all the way even if they arent the best team.

Oh for sure. In most sports, if you can make the playoffs then you never know what's gonna happen. I've just learned to temper my expectations as a Padres/chargers fan lol

They've got a tough path through the playoffs though. First the Mets and then the Dodgers.

We've lost pretty much every series against the dodgers this year but shutting them out through 9 innings last series gave me hope (even if we lost 0-1 in extra innings lol). Our starting pitching with Yu, Snell and Musgrove can hang with the best of them. It's just our inconsistent offense that'll be the deciding factor.

Why did they wait to get good after I left San Diego?

A combination of getting an owner (Siedler) that finally cares and was willing to spend money, a GM that was willing to take risks and spend money and is actually pretty decent at stocking the farm, and lucking into Tatis, Cronenworth and other signings like our starting pitching. Funny enough, we didn't have Tatis this season and Soto has been underwhelming, but nabbing Bob Melvin from the As was huge in reigning in the clubhouse compared to the inexperienced Tingler last year
