Hell arguably it's better to be where we're at now, back to normal. Otherwise, we'd be doing lockdowns, cases would go down, we'd relax a bit, cases would go up, we'd lock down... it would never end. We'd still be in lock downs in October 2022. In this timeline, we've been back to normal for over a year in my state and in many others.

With the lockdown cycle, millions would still die, it would just be dragged out far longer and everyone would be suffering far more from the negatives of locking down (which are conveniently handwaved away for reasons that escape me). In this timeline, at least the rest of the country is back to normal.

It's worth pointing out that Trump and the Fed kept interest rates near zero during COVID, presumably to artifically prop up the stock market (that by rights should have absolutely tanked) and help his re-election chances. This rampant inflation is a direct result of it.
