The nice thing is theres a big variety too: there are several dive bars, some of which have great food, some music venues, a few fancy cocktail places, a wine bar, places with pool tables, a barcade, a couple craft beer bars with tons of taps, a few brewery taprooms, elevated pub food type places, a margarita/taco spot

expand a little bit past a half mile and there are a few more breweries too

I'm still confused as to why this is a mostly Midwest thing.

Bars are smaller and have lower overhead. Why wouldn't there be more of them over grocery stores everywhere?

I can get cities that have loads of bodegas as an example against, but not a national trend.

Yeah this. Lived in Milwaukee for a good span.

My favorite bar was a low key one tucked away in a buildings basement. Used to be a speakeasy. Clientele were mostly older but cool people with interesting stories and humor. No one minded if you smoked a cigar. There was also a Wii set up with a projector.

I have no idea how many bars are within a half-mile of me, but I live downtown in a city that is known for having, among other things, a whole lot of bars
