But I see nothing to suggest he was ever going to win even if they hadnt. I guess its a well never know scenario, but I think I know. Im sure some minor things can be pointed to in 2020 but I wouldnt consider it remotely the same.

The idea that Bernie Sanders is the reason Clinton lost is nonsense. Clinton lost because of Clinton.

First off, the 08 primary was WAY more of a slugfest and Obama did not mince words slandering Clinton himself. There was a lot of bad blood during this between Obama supporters and Clinton supporters. Obama went on to win the election in a blowout against a more well-liked Republican.

Secondly, Clinton won the election by three million votes. But somehow in the US you can finish that many votes behind(or more) but somehow still win.

Third, Sanders pretty much gave her the biggest gift ever by overperforming and beating her in states like michigan, wisconsin, etc. That made it clear right there that she could have an issue there and that she might want to spend a little more effort shoring up those states. She opted not to while Trump went hard in that region knowing those states were his main route to victory.

Even more, Clinton and the Democrats straight up wanted Trump to win the Republican primary as they saw him as an easy tin can to beat. They still promote ultra-right candidates and even donate to them because they find them easier to run against. I'm not even saying it's a bad strategy, but if you keep going to that well, those candidates are eventually going to win.

The DNC fought against Bernie in both 2016 and 2020. It's out in plain sight. One difference though is that 2016 felt like the scales were weighed for Hillary, and in 2020 against Bernie.

I don't think the DNC was the sole reason Bernie lost either run, but their actions exposed the lengths they're willing to go to in order to keep control. The way I see it now, the Dems will never allow significant change from within.

Well no, at the end of the day he still needed people to vote for him in the primaries, and they didn't.

I believe he's more interested in the visibility and being able to promote his ideas to a wide audience than expecting he'd win.

Like it or not, when given a head to head option between Bernie and Biden, Dem voters chose Biden. Not being able to expand one's base or build coalitions ate pretty major shortcomings.

Sure it can. The Dem base had a clear choice after SC between Biden and Bernie, with a couple also rans still in, and they chose Biden pretty decisively.

When? Electorally he's never appealed outside his support base other than having the anti-Hillary vote in 2016, and politically I can't recall him getting a major piece of policy of his passed on his own initiative.

The electorate of Dem primaries are heavily skewed towards superfans of the Dem party (even just as a thing/sports team) and people with extremely high opinions of cable news.

So they listen to Dem party leadership and cable news when they say "Biden is our choice to beat Trump." That's how he can jump so quickly from near last place finishes to the only option.

All of the polling data out there says the majority of Dem primary voters prioritized voting for who they were told was the best chance against Trump, not the policy or candidate they preferred.

So for Bernie to expand his base, he has to reach outside of that echo chamber, which he did with latinos to crush it in Nevada. It's tough sledding, though. Because people outside the reach of party leadership just don't reliably vote in primaries and may not be registered with that party in time to do so even if they wanted.

I was going to say no since his time is basically done (as much as I liked him in 2016 and 2020), but you had to go and make one of my least favorite 2020 candidates the alternative. Can you redo this poll and put in some actually normal young blood so I don't have to vote for the octogenarian?

Yeah but that came after most of the party leadership endorsed Biden. Before the endorsements united behind any one candidate Bernie was performing the best.

Bernie losing to people who have most of the party's heavy hitters behind them isn't an indictment of him.
