I didn't like how Tropical Freeze went all in on the style of having a bunch of little *tough* sections strung together but with a lot of checkpoints, in contrast to the older games where it's just a level with one checkpoint without a lot of overly challenging stuff but still not easy to one shot. Returns wasn't really like the old games either though and had some of those short, hard parts, but not as much as TF from my recollection

1 is kind of rough around the edges, but when it works, it really works. It's just that there are plenty of real stinkers here as well.

2 is a masterpiece: it has the best atmosphere and gameplay. Level design is consistent and tight, and gimmicks don't overstay their welcome.

3 is incredibly self-indulgent: it's larded to the gills with dull laugh-lines and ever-shifting gimmicks that are all too often tedious and annoying. After the fun, flavorful pirate jaunt, we return to a vastly more generic theming. Also has a notably weaker selection of animal buddies: poor Squitter's back is breaking from having to carry a lameoid like Ellie. However, when it's on, it's on.

None of them are good at boss fights.
