Earlier today, the biggest leak in Rockstar history took place, with over an hour's worth of GTA 6 footage leaking online, giving a look at an in-development version of the game just months after Rockstar confirmed that work had started on the next game. According to several sources, Rockstar is aware of the situation and its employees are reportedly "devastated" by the leak. It's been several hours since the GTA 6 leaks started spreading, but we've still not had any comment from Rockstar itself. Although the studio hasn't released a statement yet, several insiders are reporting having spoken to developers from the studio. One such insider is Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who confirmed who spoke to his sources to confirm the footage is real, calling it a "nightmare" for Rockstar and one of the biggest leaks in gaming history.

Schreier isn't the only one talking to Rockstar. YouTuber LegacyKillaHD reports from his sources that the team is "gutted" by the leaks. He said, "I'm sure it's not needed but I've spoken to a couple sources at Rockstar Games this morning & they are all gutted. Devastated. Most are waiting till Monday to find out how leadership responds or what happens next but indeed this is the real deal".

It also spoiled there are male playable characters. So that whole woman lead outrage makes even less sense now.

I really don't see how a software developer would be devastated by anything leaking. It's not like they're going to stop making the game. The only people I could see actually being upset are the marketing team since this blows their opportunity at a big reveal, but other than them I just don't see why the team making the actual game would care.

Edit: if anything, I would think they would be relieved because now they can tell their friends and family what they've been working on rather than trying to keep it under wraps.

I feel like this written version is really trying to sell me on how literal they were using words. But sometimes you hear the vocal version and realize they weren't putting nearly as much emotion behind it as the article made it appear. We all talk in extremes in current culture. It's the emotion behind it that is most telling

All I know is somebody is going to be eviscerated by this. If it was a hack, well, Take-Two has sued people over mods to their games. Legal ramifications of hacking aside, how do you think they are going to react to somebody who is trying to negotiate a deal "in good faith" over stuff that has been acquired through illegitimate means?

It was a hack. The guy who leaked it is claiming responsibility for the Uber hack as well.

However the employee who got their credentials compromised for this attack is probably done.

All the reports call it a leak so I dont think it was a hack. I think Rockstar taking so long to release a sequel kinda caused this to be so anticipated. Like if someone leaked Madden Footage no one would care. But Half Life 3 being leaked would be major news for how long it has been since a sequel.

Valve leaks happen all the time. We know of at least three projects in development.

The source code for the game was also stolen. So that means a copy of all of the code they've created so far, it's now out in the wild. Obviously, no one can else can profit off of it because it will be pretty obviously stolen. But that would be devastating to know that someone just stole a copy of everything you've been working on.

Not really. One, because as I said it's not like the project is in jeopardy, and two, I guarantee those developers regularly copy and paste code from other projects or stack overflow when they're trying to figure out how to do something.

Unless you've literally invented an entirely new algorithm, or you're a small business startup that could very well collapse under their code being released, software developers really don't give a shit about their code. Usually the only one that cares is the legal team or someone who focuses on the proprietary nature of it, but I've never met a programmer who would have been anything more than mildly annoyed if they found out that code they had written had been released online.

Eh? No they don't. They've become super encapsulated after the HL2 leak. A guy famously hacked valve a few years ago and couldn't find anything. There's a good chance their development servers aren't connected to the office network or the internet. Check ins / commits are probably done through a managed process that isn't online at all times.

How often does Rockstar reuse songs from previous games? In the second scene i hear a song that's in GTA V.

If it's set in Vice City I hope we get V Rock that still plays Love Fist songs but it wouldn't be the same without Lazlow.

Stepping Out and Tainted Love were added in V/Online when they were in VC and SA respectively. Probably was a placeholder anyway.

V Rock in Vice City ruined in game radio stations for me.

Disappointed it's set in Vice City.

Was hoping for a new location instead of another round of old locations reused.

I refuse to believe some cog-in-the-wheel developer is gutted by 40 minutes of debug footage from three years ago leaking online. Literally nothing is changing for him as a result of this, aside from maybe changing his password when he goes into work on Monday.

GTA V's source code got leaked and a chunk of GTA VI's source code was also leaked

So here's the thing, GTA V/Online has made Take Two and Rockstar tens of billions of dollars so with this leak compromising any of these potential equal returns, they will absolutely lay the hammer down on the ones responsible in whatever association they fall under.

And? Why would a programmer care? As long as hes getting paid, its quite literally no skin off his back. I could see him being a bit disappointed if the project was being scrapped after years of work, but lets face it, theres no way Take Two is going to scrap a multi-hundred million dollar project this late into its development cycle.

Oh I agree. Whoever did this is gonna have all hell to pay, but thats still no reason the average middle rung dude at rockstar should care.

This stuff increases workload on devs. At the bare minimum security will be tighter. Change control will become more restrictive and Devs will start losing privileges to things they used to have all because of one person.

Then there's a matter of what new features they need to add to the code to prevent people from using the existing leaked code to crack the game.

They might actually. Bad or unexpected press has killed projects before. They may have to scrap what they have or redo it too.

It's not a controlled leak. There's way too much debug information that leaked and people are already figuring out what the overall map looks like based on coordinate info.

There's also secrets and easter eggs being leaked like UFOs and a Skunk Ape

It's actually about 53 minutes of content in total.

Plus the source code for both GTA 5 and GTA 6 were stolen. That's the part that would be devastating to the developers. Depending on how far into development GTA 6 is (we only recently got confirmation that it was even in development), this could cause Rockstar to make a lot of changes. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

The videos being leaked isn't really a big deal at all.

The source code for GTA 5 and 6 being leaked is insane though. Since Rockstar gets so much money from online, the source code leak has the potential for online to be infested with hackers.
