What you keep ignoring is that doesn't make him smart. It just makes him able to understand 1 basic concept, which he always has because his family sledgehammered into his malformed head from birth. Trump is actually stupid. Unfathomably stupid. He's already fucked up and incriminated himself several times during just this case alone. The problem is that Republicans are protecting him and covering for him because they would literally rather let Trump take the entire country down with him than admit they fucked up, risk losing some (probably most) of their political power and putting an end to the madness.

That's really all it is. An idiot being protected by prideful assholes who don't want "the left" to have a win. If Trump was actually smart, he wouldn't even be in this situation in the first place.

Trump has never really changed either.

He was a narcissist who wanted to shove his face on camera wherever he could and wanted to slap his name on as many public things as possible.

He had the money to actually make that possible and the US is very much a place that lets people like this succeed at doing that as long as they have the money to maintain it.

He has money and he has goals. That means there's always going to be a supply of people who want those jobs and his money. He ended up becoming famous enough where he never ran out of things to slap his name on. He even got his own TV show.

Of course most of these things don't exactly have any substance to them. Stuff like a casino that bankrupted and a fraudulent University. These things only existed because people had heard of the name Trump. It didn't matter that there wasn't actually anything to his brand or name. Trump isn't actually intelligent enough to make things into a proper success. He's just a loud rich idiot that succeeds in a society where loud, rich men can continually sustain their popularity as long as they're loud and shameless enough. He's narcissistic enough to always blame others for failures and never really has to suffer the consequence of actually failing. A dangerous combination overall.

The difference with him was that he even managed to run that over to being President. That doesn't make him intelligent. It worked the same way as everything else he does did. He wanted to put his name on something. People knew that name, knew he had money and used his loud personality to overshadow a bunch of politicians who were mostly unprepared how successful cults of personalities with money would be when it comes to politics.

But at the end of the day his presidency failed just like basically anything he does when he actually has responsibilities that go beyond yelling at people on camera. Because he's an idiot. But if you're rich and narcissistic enough that doesn't matter. People will give them what they want and always will.

But that the Zodiac community (people online obsessed with the killer) dismissed his claim and wouldn't even look into it.
