So basically, Magnus used an extremely rare variation of his opening and his opponent used the oerfect counter to it that's only been used in a recorded game or two. Barring him having studied all potential variants and games with it, there are several ways to cheat over the board. Getting given the moves to use via someone spectating and using a computer and database is the most common method, though that's usually done via a microphone. The thing is, competitors get sent through a metal detector just to enter the tournament building. You'd figure that a remote controlled buttplug would also get detected, even if it was already in seeing as steel plates and the like show up. To counter this, there's now a 15 minute delay in the streams for the game so nobody spectating can look up the optimal plays. And the player accused of cheating had a metal detector wand scoured over him as he arrived each day afterwards. But yeah, realistically I don't think the guy cheated and Magnus hasn't even formally accused him but he implied it and it's resulted in the opponent being punished with scrutiny and other GMs accusing him as well as his ban from chess.com and removal from their upcoming $1 million prize tournament. Incidentally, chess.com very recently acquired Magnus Carlson's website so he holds a large stake in chess.com as part of the deal.
