basically two of the big healthcare unions are enacting strikes for better pay. this happens relatively regularly, but this time they are threatening to cease all hospital work, whereas usually they'll still staff hospitals so that patients stay alive, even during a strike. the government responded by fast-tracking a law that would enable them to fine nurses if they refuse to work, force resigned nurses back into work (according to a union rep, by having cops escort them to a hospital if necessary) and to prevent mass resignations

tbf they still get paid a fair bit more than what people in most jobs get, but given the awful working conditions in chronically understaffed hospitals and now this, i can't see this exactly improving the number of people wanting to work in healthcare

relative to what nurses make in other european countries, their pay here is pretty dismal. relative to the rest of finland working a job off of a 3 year education, they're around the same. the unions love touting how low the starting base pay is while neglecting to mention that once you add up all of the different % increases ranging from night to sunday/holiday pay and whatever else, they're well above what an average finn makes yearly

the whole healthcare system is kind of collapsing under its own weight tho and politicians can't really work on reforming it because suggesting that is political suicide and they want that lifetime of easy dosh and free shit
