A month after college graduation, Kailee and Cade married in Marble Falls, Texas. They're both proud to be native Texans -- Kailee's family has lived there for generations and Cade's ancestors are among Texas' "Old Three Hundred," the original families that joined Stephen Austin to settle the area in the 1800s.

At the time, the DeSpains were both passionately anti-abortion.

"I was just your quintessential pro-life Texan," Kailee, 29, told CNN in a recent interview.
"I was raised in central Texas by extremely Republican parents and grandparents," Cade, 31, said. "One hundred percent pro-life."

A year after they were married, Kailee miscarried at 16 weeks and was hospitalized for severe complications, including blood clots and infection. It was one of three miscarriages she had in the early years of marriage.

"It made me realize that pregnancy can be dangerous," she said. "It made me think of my little sisters, and I wanted them to be able to have a choice if they ever had to go through something like that."

Last September, when a restrictive anti-abortion law took effect in Texas, Kailee pled on Facebook for people to contact their elected representatives to protect abortion rights.

It really shouldn't come down to every individual person having to almost fucking die to realize that abortion rights are important. They had to drive 10 hours to a clinic in New Mexico to have an abortion because the pregnancy put her own life at risk.

That's how it works with conservatives. They don't realize lgbtq+ protections are important until one of their family members comes out (if they don't disown or attempt conversion first), and they don't realize that abortion services are important until they suffer from their own unwanted pregnancy or health complication. They don't make statues about those things so they're just not important to them until it's too late.

And since they're the ones who made it that way I actively loathe them and don't care that they ended up on the right side in the end, because they never ever own up and take responsibility for creating the hellscape before changing their mind.

I know conservatives (my family in Texas) that don't believe in covid even after people they know (my family in Texas) died from it. So I guess like being aware of things is kinda progress for these morons.

She deserves some credit here. She could have been a hypocrite, quietly had her abortion, kept it secret and continued to spout the anti-abortion slogans. But she came forward and admitted that she was wrong. That she now sees why what she was taught to believe from childhood by her elders is wrong.

Her being open and honest about it could potentially lead others to rethink their positions. Especially those like her who were just raised to accept and believe.
