I have a bad feeling having no choice but to start a new career at 42 years old in the future will not go well for me.

if you live to be 80, then maybe sometime in your late 60s/early 70s.

you might not get as far as you like if you wait too long (health issues, prejudice against older workers, etc.), but going back to school, taking advantage of resources it provides, your previous experience/connections, and so on can go a long way.

but I feel at 42, you have plenty of time - from what I hear, you see a bunch of people in their 40s, 50s, and higher in med school, law school, and post-graduate programs.

If Jonny Kim can do it, so can you.

Harvard doctor and ex-Navy SEAL Jonny Kim is officially the first Korean-American NASA astronaut!

The child of Korean immigrants, Jonny Kim joined the Navy after graduating high school and eventually reached the top-status of Navy SEAL, serving as a medic, sniper, and navigator on over 100 combat operations. His achievements didn't stop there as he went on to obtain a doctorate of medicine at Harvard Medical School and become a resident physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Its never too old to start a new career. Find something that you can enjoy so that way going to work doesn't suck as much as it can.

White collar jobs? Not even an issue until you hit 50 as long as you are still sharp.

Idk it really depends on the career and your life circumstances. Some careers are more catered towards younger people and some have a higher barrier to entry, which means you'll need to have some financial stability to even attempt to get into them.

If it's something relatively easy to get into like education or something then it's almost never too late. But if you're trying to be like a news anchor or something in front of a camera it gets exponentially more difficult as you age.
