His original design really doesn't say ghost. He looks like maybe a normal or fighting type specialist. Or a skater type. Also his hair looks dumb. Remake fixed it all.

Not looking like a Ghost specialist is what made his design interesting imo. You hear about him from a few npcs and trainers and he comes off all wise and mystical, then you meet him and he's just this regular dude. I like it when character designs go against what you'd expect.

I love Phoebe for the same reason. Who'd expect her to be a ghost-type master, out of the Elite Four at that?

That's a cool angle. I guess I just don't remember the buildup before meeting him lol. I feel like the redesign kinda has some of the same "just a guy" energy while also incorporating some ghosty elements. Like he isn't all decked out in robes and a hood, but at least he has some purple.

With Phoebe, I guess I always thought her attire was supposed to be exotic or something. At least it's a unique character design within its game.
