https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2022/08/25/covid-kids-under-5-vaccination-rates-low-hospitalizations-rise/7882810001/

Vaccinations for babies, toddlers and preschoolers opened in June after months of delay. But only about 3.4% of children under 2 and 5.7% of children ages 2 to 4 have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I can't say that I've heard or seen as much of a push to get kids vaccinated as when they approved the shots for kids five and older.

Covid? Eh, whatever. They are a low risk group and germ factories anyways so people at high risk shouldnt be around them. The adults working with kids should be vaccinated though.

Not like kids don't have families with elderly relatives in them or anything.

It's fine they'll live with lifelong pulmonary problems but at least they don't have microchips /s

Im not sure parents are aware that under 5 year olds are eligible for vaccines. It hasnt been available for very long. Hopefully pediatricians are letting parents know at their regularly scheduled appointments.

If society really cared about shit like that, wed already have Epstein-Barr virus vaccines.

I looked into getting my kids the shot a couple weeks after they got approved but didn't see many places offering it to kids that young yet. Haven't gotten back around to it yet.

Yeah this. Vaccines for children under 5 was just approved on June 18th. And I haven't seen a big media push for it like with the other age groups.

Ah yes. Just avoid an entire 6% of the population indefinitely.

Very feasible.

Thats a good thing, though who knows how long before one actually becomes available. Hopefully they make one that grants long lasting protection and is approved for a young enough age group.

Would probably help if we treated covid shots like flu shots. New shot every year and people are encouraged but not required to take it.

You do realize kids grow older right?

Even in a world without covid, youd ideally keep young kids away from such people. Exposing a group of people that are less able to fight off various infections to a group that gets and spreads like everything is not a good idea.

You do realize people work in jobs that require being around children right?

Not just talking jobs directly aimed at young children like Daycares and preschools but also stuff like resturants or museums.

Yes, and? A lot of those jobs are really dangerous for immunocompromised people. Adding another rapidly mutating airborne virus certainly makes things worse, but it doesnt fundamentally alter the world.

If we fall into a cycle, then we can time vaccination pushes to maximize their effect. In such a situation, low vaccination rates among children would be bad. But as is, covid seems to peak fairly randomly(seems to be whenever a new variant gains a substantial advantage) and no one is going to get their kids vaccinated often enough to be ready for whenever a surge happens.
